The Opportunity
The Canine (K9) Handler and dog must work as a team and assist Security in searches and hazardous situations. The Canine Handler is accountable for any reports and evaluations arising out of the K9 assignment and will work as a team in conjunction with the Security Department. They will strengthen the Security Department to ensure the safety of Associates and Guests by utilizing a trained and certified dog.
- Reply to and investigate calls from the Security department.
- Follow standard operating procedures when conducting and performing searches.
- Patrol assigned areas as needed, including a building, or building site.
- Walk around site boundaries looking for and investigating suspicious activity.
- Conduct searches of packages, purses, backpacks, containers, rooms, buildings, areas, or other objects as directed.
- Maintain the K9’s proficiency through routine training and certification.
- Maintain the day-to-day health and welfare of the K9 to include maintaining diet, ensuring adequate water throughout the day, and daily health checks.
- Properly utilize K9 equipment to include safety equipment for canines.
- Maintain all assigned K9 related equipment.
- Perform basic K9 emergency first-aid as needed.
- Act as a first responder in emergency situations.
- Carry and champion the K9 program to success.
- Always present yourself in a professional manner while on duty.
Initial opportunities
- Assist with rollout, implementation, and integration of K9 program for Grand Casino Security Department.
- Design and implement a professional and functional K9 Handler Uniform, as approved by Director of Security.
- Assist with selection and subsequent licensing of a qualified vendor for veterinarian services, including 24-hour emergency care.

Must haves
- Must be able to work varied shifts, be available for incident/emergency response duty, standby duty, which may include weekends, holidays, nights, and overnights.
- Must be able to assume a role of authority as necessary in a high-risk crisis, exhibiting judgment and a realistic understanding of issues, review facts, weigh options, delegate responsibility, and empower Associates to make decisions.
- Must be able to respond calmly in crisis and stressful situations and be able to make rational decisions when handling Guest and Associate issues.
- Maintain annual K9 certifications.
- Must be CPR certified.
What qualifies you
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- K9 handling training is required.
- Must be able to secure license from Gaming Regulatory Authority.
- Responsible for following all relevant Detailed Gaming Regulations (DGR’s).
- Mille Lacs Band Member and American Indian preference will be exercised in the hiring process.
Physical demands
- Talk and hear; ability to communicate effectively.
- See and adjust focus to include close, distance, depth, and peripheral vision.
- Stand, walk, run, sit, (up to 8 hours) balance, stoop, kneel, climb, crouch, and/or crawl.
- Handle objects, tools, and controls; reach with arms and hands.
- Be able to lift and carry objects up to sixty (60) lbs.
Work environment
While performing the duties of this job, the associate is regularly exposed to:
- A low-to-moderate noise level (offices).
- A moderate-to-loud noise level (public areas).
- Outside elements including extreme cold, hot, and wet conditions.
Grand Casino will provide the following compensation for the K9: (note that all items listed are subject to pre-approval by Director of Security, and only provided for the length of time that the K9 is able to provide service to Grand Casino)
- Initial Training and certification for Handler and K9 through selected K9 providing vendor.
- Food for the K9.
- Veterinarian service, for the time that the K9 is in service.
- Tools or materials directly related to training of the canine, interactive toys, etc., including, but not limited to K9 Identification Vest, collars, leashes, scents (used for training),
- Fuel cost to transport the K9 to and from training exercises
- Vitamin supplements, prescriptions, etc., as prescribed by a licensed Veterinarian.
- Vehicle restraint (kennel or other means) to transport the canine to Grand Casino from the Handler’s home.
- 1 hour per day of paid time for preparation or care of K9.
- 8 hours of paid training time for the K9 and handler per month.
- Costs associated with training and re-certification of K9 and Handler, if not provided by the selected K9 Providing Vendor
Property of Grand Casino
The K9 is property of Grand Casino Hinckley. Upon separation of employment with Grand Casino, the K9 will be relinquished to the Security Department. A new Canine Handler will be selected, and canine providing vendor will deliver additional training for implementation of the K9 with a new Handler.
