University Housing within the Division of Student Life invites applications for the position of Certified Indoor Environmentalist (CIE). The CIE is responsible for the development, implementation, and administration of a comprehensive, department-wide occupational and residential health program, using indoor air quality concepts to establish and maintain a safe work and living environment for employees, students, and residents through the identification and correction of unsafe conditions.

University Housing has the capacity to house over 8,500 residents in 15 different on-campus residence halls each academic year. The department has a close working relationship with a variety of Student Life units and academic offices on campus.

The Position: The CIE will develop, implement, and manage policies, procedures and training to specifically address a variety of indoor air quality issues. The CIE also develops and manages criteria for University Housing site safe audits, and conducts routine inspections of facilities.


Responsibilities:

  • The CIE leads investigations for accidents, injuries, and complaints concerning indoor air quality, mold, VOC’s, allergens, dampness, poor ventilation, and sick building syndrome.
  • Evaluates atmospheric conditions utilizing technical equipment and industry standard procedures.
  • Through the use of sampling strategies/methodologies the CIE develops exposure control strategies and makes appropriate decisions based on regulatory statutes and university policies.
  • Interpret complex standards and create defensible strategies, and interpret new regulations and their applicability to campus operations.

What We Require

Education: a Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health or Public Health. CIE certification is required (American Council for Accredited Certification) (ACAC) or must be obtained within two (2) years of employment date.

Experience: a minimum of three (3) years applied experience in indoor air quality, safety, and health program management, or two (2) years with a degree in science, biomedical engineering or related field, preferably in higher education, public sector, consulting, or manufacturing.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of pertinent regulatory standards and industry codes/guidance, including but not limited to OSHA, NFPA, ANSI, ACGIH and NIOSH publications.

What We Prefer:

Education: Master’s degree in Occupational Health, Safety, Public Health, Environmental or Biomedical Engineering or related field.

Salary: The salary for this position is commensurate with experience and other qualifications and is accompanied by a standard university benefits package. This is an exempt, 12-month, full-time, non-tenure track staff position.
