Surgical Scrub Technician Job Description

Position Summary
The main role of the Surgical Scrub Technician is to anticipate the needs of the surgical team; establish and maintain sterile fields during the surgical procedures/treatments in the operating room.

Qualifications

• High school graduate or equivalent
• 2 years clinical experience in the operating room environment required
• Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) preferred or sufficient training completed prior to 2010 with 15 hours continued education each year, per TN requirement
• BLS required
• Ability to work independently and as a team
• Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
• Can communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
• Ability to handle difficult situations involving patients, physicians, or others in a professional manner

Job Responsibilities

• Promote the mission, vision, and values of the organization in a professional manner.
• Complies with policies and procedures; adheres to safety guidelines to ensure a safe work and patient care environment.
• Recognizes and responds to opportunities for improvement.
• Ensures sterility of all supplies and instruments during set up of surgical procedures.
• Assists the entire surgical team in maintaining a sterile environment.
• Gathers necessary surgical supplies and equipment. Is responsible for doing sponge and sharps counts pre- and intra-operatively with the registered circulating nurse.
• Retains all specimens to be sent to pathology, confirming source/name of specimen with surgeon.
• Cleans and disinfects the Operating Room per facility housekeeping standards.
• Transports all surgical equipment to appropriate sterile processing areas; assists the sterile processing department with cleaning and reprocessing of instruments.
• Follows all equipment and safety guidelines and is responsible for knowledgeable use and care of equipment.
• Uses Standard Universal Precautions, appropriate hand hygiene, personal protective equipment, and safe practices to ensure personal safety and a safe environment.
• Gowns and gloves surgeons and assistants.
• Assists in keeping physician preference cards accurate/updated.
• Maintains designated certifications such as BLS, as offered by the center.
• Assist with environmental hazard and infection control surveillance and participates in emergency preparedness drills.
• Attends in-services, conferences, and meetings as required.
• Maintain regulatory requirements, including all state, federal and local regulations.
• Shall complete fifteen (15) hours of continuing education or contact hours annually to remain qualified for employment and shall submit verification of having completed such continuing education or contact hour requirements. The submission of current certification by the NBSTSA shall satisfy the requirements of this subsection.
• Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
• Represent the organization in a positive and professional manner at all times.
• Responsible for knowing and following the standards established by HIPAA.
• Other Duties as Assigned.

Physical Demands

The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk, and hear. The employee shall regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Reasonable accommodations will be made to help those employees who are physically challenged. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, extreme cold, and the risk of radiation. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, and the risk of electrical shock.
