Normal Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am to 4:45pm

Job Summary: The Communications Specialist II works under moderate supervision to craft communications and develop and implement communication plans and activities to support the goals of a department and/or college/division and the University. Coordinates the production of materials and resources through a variety of platforms, including digital and physical mediums. Knows and applies fundamental communications and public relations concepts, practices and processes. May supervise students.

Additional Department Summary: This Communications Specialist II manages all University open records requests. Reviews and drafts policies. Crafts communications for special projects. Coordinates closely with legal counsel on records requests and with various campus units to develop and implement communication plans and activities to support the goals of the University. Works with a variety of written projects, including formal correspondence, news stories, marketing copy and reports, often with tight deadlines. Builds relationships daily in gathering and disseminating information. Reports to the Associate Vice President for Communications.

Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree and two (2) years of journalism, public relations, marketing, communications; OR master’s degree or higher and some experience in journalism, public relations, marketing, communications. Student or Graduate Assistant, Intern, or student-oriented experience will be considered. To be considered student experience, it must be detailed in the employment section on the application.

Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Experience with Microsoft 365 programs. Must be able work occasional nights and weekends as needed.

Skills and Knowledge: Excellent organization and records management skills. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to think analytically and work independently with moderate supervision. Ability to manage and maintain records with confidentiality and discretion. Relationship building skills. Knowledge of current and developing trends in communications. Understanding of and experience with redactions.

Preferred Qualifications: Some experience with open records requests or other legal documents. Three (3) years of experience in higher education communications and/or public relations.
