The Center for Resilient Communities in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a Community GIS Program Coordinator.

About the Opportunity

This position will work with the WVU Center for Resilient Communities to advance applied geographic research in the areas of resilience planning including regional food systems. food access, climate and environmental justice, community economics, and health disparities in WV and beyond. WVU CRC has completed a strategic plan to implement a Community GIS program and will begin execution in January of 2023. The Community GIS Program Coordinator will manage and implement the strategic plan in coordination with CRC staff and partners.

What You'll Do

Responsibilities are both managerial and functional in nature and performed under direct supervision. Specific tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead implementation of the CRC Community GIS Strategic Plan.
  • Build and manage the ArcGIS online Resilience Hub.
  • Manage a comprehensive GIS database for West Virginia.
  • Oversee GIS database updates, design, outputs and security.
  • Develop and manage GIS applications and other software tools for external and internal partners.
  • Manage budgets related to extramurally funded research and contracts.
  • Lead teams in the design, implementation and reporting of research conducted for our clients and partners.
  • Supervise part-time staff and graduate research assistants in the implementation of research projects.
  • Contribute analysis to papers, reports, social media and other research outputs.
  • Support grant-seeking efforts that advance the research mission of the WVU Center for Resilient Communities.
Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in environmental science, geographic information science or related field Or An equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of experience involving:
    • ARC GIS and mapping systems experience
    • Geography and Cartography Training
    • Resource Management
    • Project oversight and management
    • Personnel Management
  • Advanced knowledge of GIS processes and procedures, the service and/or product and its application.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret geographic periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, technical and scientific correspondence, and procedure manuals. Proven track record of geographic analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively present geographic information in professional meetings/conferences. Ability to respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Knowledge of geographic design techniques, tools, and principals involved in production of precision maps and geo-web design.

The WVURC was created as a not-for-profit corporation in 1985 to support research (R1) at West Virginia University. We provide evaluation, development, patenting, management, and marketing services for inventions of the faculty, staff and students of the University.

The WVURC receives and administers funds awarded by external agencies for research and other activities and is responsible for helping protect intellectual property through patents, copyrights and licensing agreements for start-up companies based on University research.
