Reporting directly to the Correctional Lieutenant III and/or Correctional Housing Unit Manager, this position provides first line supervision to Correctional Officer III’s. Other job responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Assigning lower level custody staff and overseeing Correctional Officer activities and performance.
• Arranging work schedule rules to ensure staff coverage.
• Implementing operational procedures and ensuring rules and regulations are followed according to NCDAC policy and procedures.
• Giving direction during drills, searches, and emergencies.
• Referring offenders to Restrictive Housing for temporary assignment as needed.
• Leading staff in carrying out tactical assignment(s) as needed.
• Responding to emergency situations, searching for escaped offenders, and transporting offenders.
• Conducting and/or supervising searches of offenders, their living quarters, and work areas for contraband.
• Investigating and taking action when appropriate regarding security issues, incidents, disputes, and complaints.
• Preparing and reviewing a variety of reports.
• Completing annual performance evaluations and assisting in assessing, evaluating, and implementing employee discipline.
• Conducting staff briefing sessions.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits. The selected candidate may be selected to work any shift and will work weekends and holidays to ensure 24/7 staff coverage.

The salary grade for this position is NC09 (Salary Range: $37,577 - $65,760). State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.

About Central Prison:
Central Prison in Raleigh, NC has been in continuous service since 1884. It serves as the admission point into prison for adult male felons sentenced to 20 years or more and is the main medical and mental health center for male offenders. It also houses special populations, including death row and safe keepers.

While security requires that certain offenders remain in their cells, there are more than 260 offender job assignments that include working in the kitchen, laundry, or canteen. Offenders also work as barbers, janitors, and clerks. Offenders can attend substance abuse group therapy meetings, Bible studies or other worship services.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma AND three years of experience as a Correctional Officer, OR two years of experience as a Correctional Officer III; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications*: Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.
