DEFINITION: The junior and senior high school guidance counselor advises individuals and provides group educational and vocational guidance services by performing the following duties.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

Guidance Curriculum
Meet with individual or small groups of students outside of the classroom setting to respond to identified interests or needs.
Conduct or coordinate parenting seminars to provide information and/or support as needed or requested.
Individual Planning
Assist students in developing immediate and long-range plans by analyzing and evaluating students’ abilities, interests, skills and achievement.
Work with students in planning personal, educational, and career goals.
Assist students win making the transition from school to school through orientation activities.
Participate in the intervention team process or school support team.
Responsive Services
Provide individual counseling for students in the areas of personal/social, educational/academic and career education.
Provide small group counseling based on student surveys of interest and need.
Provide consultation and feedback to parents, staff members, and community agencies regarding strategies to help students.
Make referrals to outside sources when extended counseling or support is necessary.
Counsel and support students and their families facing emergency situations and make appropriate outside referrals.
System Support
Plan and evaluate the counseling program.
Promote a positive working relationship with students, staff, and members of the community.
Consult with teachers and other staff members regularly to provide information to support staff, and to receive feedback on student needs.
Pursue continuous professional growth by keeping current with educational developments and literature in the field of school guidance.
Develop and maintain a library of pertinent information available to students, parents, and staff.
Perform other tasks and assume other responsibilities as may be assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
The guidance counselor supervises students and assumes other supervisory duties as assigned by the building principal.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: (KSAs are the attributes required to perform a job; generally demonstrated through qualifying experience, education, or training.)
Knowledge of:
- Apply current research and theory to instructional programs
- Plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom he/she was assigned.
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers and parents, skill in oral and written communication.
Language Abilities
The guidance counselor must have the abilities to:
- Read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations.
- Write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, managers, employees, clients, customers and/or the general public.
Mathematical Abilities
The guidance counselor must have the abilities to:
- Work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plain and solid geometry and trigonometry.
- Apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
Reasoning Abilities
The guidance counselor must have the abilities to:
- Define problems, gather data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Work in a friendly manner and to develop effective working relationships with students, staff, and parents.
- Perform duties in accordance with Board of Education policies.
Required Certifications and Licenses
Must possess or be able to acquire a Nevada counselor’s license issued by the Nevada Department of Education and be certified in the relevant subject area.

Experience and Training:
Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university.
Physical and Mental Requirements:
While performing duties of this job, the employee is continuously required to sit, talk and hear. Often the employee will repeat the same hand, arm or finger motion many times. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and must occasionally lift and/or move objects, such as testing material, up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as ability to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus.

Working Conditions:
Work is performed under the following conditions.
Position functions indoors in a classroom type environment where most work is performed at the front of the classroom. Environment is generally clean with limited exposure to conditions such as dust, fumes or odors. Frequent interruptions to planned work activities occur. The noise level in the work environment can be very high at times.
Exposure to climate controlled classroom settings to outside weather with temperatures ranging from mild/moderate to extreme cold/heat. May involve exposure to noise levels ranging from moderate to very loud and occasional to frequent time periods. May involve work in crowded environments.
Hazards: Classroom furniture, playground/office equipment, communicable diseases, chemicals (as related to specific assignment), and power/hand operated equipment and machinery (as related to specific assignment).
Blood-Borne Pathogens: An encounter with blood or other bodily fluids may occur in this line of work. You will be expected to know and follow the safety steps in the safety training provided annually.
