DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THECLASS:

This is a senior-level technical support position for information technology users in the County service seeing technical assistance. The position is responsible for diagnosing and resolving user problems and/ or questions related to microcomputer hardware, software, networks and peripheral equipment. Incumbents also coordinate and participate in the installation and configuration of computer hardware and software and related equipment. This position differs from Microcomputer Technician I by virtue of the higher level of technical knowledge of computer systems and procedures and greater independence of action. The work is performed under the general supervision of high level Information Services staff.

A Microcomputer Technician II also does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

· Diagnoses and resolves microcomputer and network systems user problems with computer software, hardware, networks and peripheral equipment; Provides instruction on computer hardware and software functions;

· Trains other technical support staff regarding work practices and procedures; Coordinates and participates in the installation and configuration of computer hardware and software and network printers;

· Coordinates, oversees and performs maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair to computer hardware and software;

· Coordinates and performs preventative maintenance on existing computer hardware;

· Troubleshoots and repairs complex hardware and software problems;

· Oversees and performs network associated installation, configuration and troubleshooting of equipment;

· Restores files, settings, and software to establish standards, as needed; Coordinates and participates in the testing, installation and termination of cables for network connectivity;

· Keeps abreast of latest developments in microcomputing;

· Maintains helpdesk logs and order all follow-up requests.

FULLPERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS :

Good knowledge of microcomputer hardware, software, networks and peripheral equipment; good knowledge of microcomputer hardware and software technology; ability to communicate clearly, orally and in writing; ability to problem-solve complex computer user hardware and software problems; ability to troubleshoot complex microcomputer hardware and software problems; ability to install microcomputer hardware, software and network printers; ability to operate a microcomputer and utilize common office software programs; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; ability to understand and empathize with computer user needs and concerns; ability to follow written and oral instructions; ability to learn and use various Information Systems utilized by Rensselaer County; tact, courtesy; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Either:

Successful completion of sixty (60) semester credit hours in a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees including completion of twenty-four (24) credit hours in Computer Science, Computer Information systems, Information Technology or a closely related field and two (2) years of experience in the support and maintenance of microcomputer and related peripheral equipment; or

Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and four (4) years of experience as described in (a) above; or

An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b) above.'
