Digital Security Consultants
Democracy International (DI) is seeking to hire
digital security consultants
(STTA) based around the world to support the implementation of the Justice, Rights, and Security – Rapid Response Assistance (JURIS) activity. With growing threats against the rule of law, human rights, and security, the $20 million, multi-year JURIS activity will support short-term, rapid-response activities to address critical, time-sensitive concerns and windows of opportunity worldwide. DI’s global coalition of expert, dynamic partner organizations consists of The Carter Center, FHI 360, Torchlight Group (TAG International), Pan American Development Foundation, The Asia Foundation, Proximity, The Sentinel Project, GeoPoll, Humanity & Inclusion, Physicians for Human Rights, and Ropes & Gray.
This is a remote position and this consultancy is open to US and non US citizens.
About the opportunity:
DI seeks digital security consultants interested in working closely with local actors working in high-risk environments such as conflict-affected areas or in closing civic space. Interested consultants must have demonstrated expertise in providing enabling digital security support to civil society organizations and frontline human rights defenders whose technical know-how, interest in technology, and lived experience may vary widely. Individual duties will be highly dependent on the needs of local actors and local context of JURIS interventions. Illustrative support could include:
- Digital first aid to groups or individuals facing new threats or increasing risk
- One-on-one digital security mentoring and coaching
- Rapid assessments of digital security capacity and vulnerability, including digital threat modelling and risk assessments for local groups and networks
- Conducting organization-wide digital security audits and supporting the development of related security policies
- Supporting remediation and analysis of known digital threats and attacks, including threat response and analysis of threat actors
- Training for networks, movement actors, and/or partnerships on tactics for secure communication and information safety
Desired experience:
- Knowledge of organizational audit methodologies, penetration testing, network security, and other techniques used to expose and correct security flaws
- A broad understanding of security technologies including firewalls, circumvention tactics and proxies, SIEM, antivirus software, and IDPs
- The ability to identify and spotlight vulnerabilities on on-premises and remote networks, correct problems, and prevent security breaches
- The ability to think critically and innovatively about the security solutions that can keep data safe while still allowing a programs to flourish
- High degrees of sensitivity and understanding of working with actors facing extreme risk, marginalization, and/or discrimination.
- Experience with holistic security approaches that meet partners where they are and target quick wins is highly desired
