SUMMARY:

This position plans, coordinates, directs and administers all of the purchasing and inventory management activities for the Pet Specialty and Wild Bird Division in compliance with established policies, goals, and objectives.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

· Develop and implement purchasing strategy consistent with the Sales & Marketing Plan and the Division President’s objectives.

· Supervise personnel to ensure successful execution of the Plan.

· Prepare a yearly budget for all purchased materials.

· Manage 17 key outside manufacturing/warehouse facilities. Assure facilities have ingredients and packaging to produce/supply product to fulfill Brown’s customer orders. Assure product is received back at our James Street facility in a timely manner and meets all quality standards.

· Purchase ingredients, corrugated cases, packaging, pallets and supplies necessary to meet production goals.

· Purchase finished goods from outside vendors to meet customer demands.

· Create and implement purchasing programs that contribute to cost control and reduction while increasing quality and margins (best price for best goods).

· Direct short-term and long-range buying plans managing commodity risk exposure by using futures and options based on broad corporate goals and growth objectives.

· Manage quarterly and year end physical inventories.

· Manage railcar leases with ESSEX.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This job has supervisory responsibility for the Purchasing Department.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience - 5 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills - Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style. Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

Mathematical Skills - Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability - Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Computer Skills Ability to perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Internet software; Inventory software; Manufacturing software; Order processing systems; Project Management software; MS Office Suite.

The majority of the work performed in this job (greater than 50%) is completed in an office setting. However, this job requires that the employee also carry out work (up to 40%) in the Production and Warehouse facilities.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently be exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, high, and precarious places. The employee is occasionally exposed to extreme cold; extreme heat and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment in the production is usually loud. The noise level in the office is usually quiet.
