Electrical Engineer

Boise, Idaho | Remote

Power is essential. It uplifts us. It inspires us. It moves us. And, it becomes even more critical by the day. But…There's a revolution coming.

How we view and use power is changing. Our reliance on the power grid, generators, combustion engines, and fossil fuels no longer fits who we are and where we want to be. It may seem daunting to change and break free of these shackles, but the only way is forward.

This transition to sustainable, decentralized power will only happen once, and there’s no looking back.

At Joule Case, this new reality is who we are. Do you think you have the mindset and drive to become one of us?

About Joule Case

Joule Case is power where you need it. We design and build proprietary patented battery systems that stack and swap to provide the ability for our customers to have access to grid-level power anywhere they need it.

About
the Role

As a supplier of portable energy storage and power electronics platforms, Joule Case is seeking a talented electrical engineer to join our growing team. The ideal candidate would have experience with large format batteries, power inverters, embedded control systems and/or embedded firmware, and analog circuit design in the 1kW to 100kW range. The ability to work with outside vendors on component and sub-system sourcing is critical; familiarity with applicable safety standards is a plus. As many of our vendors are in China, bi-lingual Mandarin language skills would be a strong plus. This position reports directly to the CTO, and opportunities for career growth as the organization expands are significant.

What You'll Do

  • Work with outside vendors to develop specifications for batteries, inverters, DC-DC converters and related components.
  • Design and test power electronic converters (AC-DC, DC-AC, DC-DC) from 1 kW to 150 kW
  • Design, test and implement controller designs with bus interfaces such as CAN and/or RS485.
  • Travel to vendor and customer sites to facilitate design, troubleshooting and implementation of Joule Case systems.
  • Design and test high power SiC and GaN semiconductor modules that incorporate advanced cooling schemes.
  • Design, layout, fabricate, and test printed circuit boards.
  • Participate and contribute to technical design reviews and audits of design products.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with digital control systems using microcontrollers, DSPs and FPGAs.
  • Provide regular technical updates to senior management.

Your Background

  • 5+ years of experience required in the area of power electronics, batteries and/or analog design
  • BS in Electrical Engineering
  • Experience with large format / high-voltage batteries a plus
  • Experience with analog circuit simulation and analysis tools, as well as schematic capture and layout tools
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Effective problem identification and solution skills
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced team environment
  • Ability to follow a structured development process that delivers product excellence
  • United States Citizenship required

Preferred Background

  • Bi-lingual in Mandarin and English
  • MS in Electrical Engineering
  • Experience with the use of wide band gap semiconductors
  • Experience programming various microcontrollers or DSPs
