The Electronic Systems Architect position in the Applied Embedded Systems (AES) division of the Electronic Systems Laboratory (ELSYS) will support multiple research products and projects in concert with development teams who are building complex, multi-faceted embedded and electronic systems. AES predominantly focuses on the research, development, testing, and deployment of embedded electronic and electromechanical systems. These systems provide our sponsors with technological solutions in the fields of Electronic Warfare (EW), command and control, communications, avionics, entertainment, physiological monitoring, and other applications.
Job Purpose
The Electronic Systems Architect designs, develops, and deploys integrated hardware, software, and total electronic system solutions for the organization. This Architect provides significant technical leadership in the organization through technical team leadership, leading design decisions on major programs, and providing detailed recommendations and implementation details about system modules including software, hardware technologies, and deployment requirements. The Electronic Systems Architect has the ability to independently implement or provide technical leadership to any portion of the design process.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop system architectures to deploy complex electronic systems.
- Support all phases of program execution, but primarily invest time in the program design and implementation phase.
- Guides technical vision of domain area and recommend areas for investment in internal research and development, and modernization.
- Provide significant technical impact on sponsor base and trust in community.
- Perform comparative analysis to similar systems, assessing system strengths and weaknesses.
- Research system theory and design concepts and implementation methods to help in determining system functionality, state of the art, and potential weaknesses.
- Develop technical reports/presentations for projects of high complexity. Compile report input from other researchers and prepare final report deliverable.
- Compile pertinent white papers, and competitive proposals, and provide technical vision to sponsors.
- Assume ownership of large complex program team development, and mentor team members.
Additional Responsibilities
- Lead technical projects by having a deep understanding of both sponsor requirements and GTRI capabilities
- Lead technical execution by adopting, demonstrating, and mentoring others on robust engineering approaches and best practices
- Build forward-looking architectures into sponsored research programs and align GTRI with corresponding technology roadmaps
- Deliver significant technical impact on sponsor base and build trust in the sponsor community
Required Minimum Qualifications
- Significant experience architecting complex electronic system solutions
- Significant experience planning complex engineering work and leading engineering teams in the execution of that work
- Expert knowledge of systems development processes, configuration management and control processes and project management for fielded/production systems
- Ability to create and deliver technical presentations effectively
- Experience delivering technical presentations to senior leadership and sponsors
Preferred Qualifications
- Active Secret Clearance
- Knowledge of Electronic Warfare and/or radar technologies/systems
- Experience implementing and integrating artificial intelligence and machine learning on military platforms
- Experience leading Agile development teams/programs
- Experience leading business development activities and sponsor engagements
- Experience facilitating dialogue, collaboration, and partnerships among research personnel, government, and industry stakeholders
Travel Requirements
10% - 25% travel
Education and Length of Experience

- 14 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or other relevant technical degrees.
- 12 years of related experience with a Bachelor's and Masters’ degree with one or both in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or other relevant technical degrees.
- 9 years of related experience with a Bachelor's, Master's and PhD. with at least one in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or other relevant technical degrees.
U.S. Citizenship Requirements
Due to our research contracts with the U.S. federal government, candidates for this position must be U.S. Citizens.
Clearance Type Required
Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
