Position Information
Title: Extreme Winter Weather Shelter Program Coordinator
FLSA Status: Hourly, Full-Time, Non-Exempt
Location: Extreme Winter Weather Shelter
Reports to: Emergency Shelters Program Manager
Overview
The Program Coordinator supports the Extreme Winter Weather Shelter (EWWS) through four key responsibilities; 1) Provide a safe and welcoming environment for young adults experiencing homelessness 2) Support and engage community partners and volunteers by overseeing the scheduling, supervision, and coaching of all support staff 3) Assist unsheltered youth and young adults in obtaining basic needs and 4) Manage organization-wide training opportunities for staff.
Duties and Responsibilities
Relationship Building and Problem Solving
- Engage with community partners for purpose of connecting organizations, volunteer opportunities, and service-providing staff to support the EWWS each operating season;
- Engage with young adult residents to make them feel welcome, safe, and supported;
- Collaborate with Emergency Shelters Program Manager and Resource Center Behavioral Health Specialist on how best to support residents;
- Provide input to the Emergency Shelters Program Manager regarding day-to-day behavior of residents;
- Refer young adults staying at shelter to case management and behavioral health staff at Resource Center;
- Collaborate with case management and behavioral health staff to find housing-first solutions for young adults staying at shelter;
- Ensure proper communication is given to staff, as needed.
Training and Collaboration
- Establish weekly meetings with Resident Assistants and necessary community partnersor volunteers in order to troubleshoot any issues;
- Meet with Resident Assistants on a bi-weekly basis to review performance and professional goals;
- Train Resident Assistants, community partners and necessary volunteers in documentation practices, health and safety requirements, agency policies, basic youth and young adult intervention techniques, and program policies and procedures.
- Maintain EWWS documents including intakes, end of month reports, program manual, policy/procedures, HMIS intakes, and daily census.
Safety and Cleanliness
- Ensure shelter property is safe and clean at all times;
- Coordinate necessary cleaning supplies;
- Manage monthly training requirements for Resident Assistants;
- Oversee fire drills, earthquake drills, active shooter drills, and other safety drills.
Agency-wide Professional Development
- Develop and maintain training calendars for all Rod’s House programs;
- Ensure all training for staff adhere to WAC 1490-1495;
- Search for gaps in necessary trainings to keep in compliance with funding contracts
- Research new trainings that will enhance the organization’s training procedures through both external and internal facilitators;
- Annually identify future training needs and create a curriculum to facilitate those trainings;
- Engage with community partners for purpose of connecting organizations, volunteer opportunities, and service-providing staff to provide trainings;
- Coordinate with supervisors to ensure they have materials needed to provide a proficient onboarding process for new hires.
Required or Preferred Education and/or Experience
- One of the following (required):
- A bachelor’s degree in social services or a closely related field from an accredited school and tw0 years of experience working with children or youth OR;
- Five years of successful full-time experience in a relevant field working with children or youth; and (i) supervisory abilities that promote effective staff performance; and (ii) relevant experience, training, and demonstrated skills in each area that they will be managing or supervising.
- An understanding and adherence to WAC for group homes (required);
- An understanding of and adherence to a strengths-based philosophy with youth and young adults (required);
- Dedication to promoting an inclusive and diverse workplace through competency in equity, race, social justice, differently-abled, and LGTBQ+ identities (required);
- Bilingual (Spanish-English) (strongly preferred).
- Three or more years of nonprofit management or leadership experience, such as program planning and evaluating, budgeting, and supervising (preferred);
- Experience working with individuals who have experienced trauma, specifically severe mental illnesses and substance use disorders (preferred);
- Lived experience relevant to the population served (preferred);
- Experience working with young people experiencing homelessness (preferred).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Must be at least 21 years of age (required);
- Pass a Washington State criminal background check (required);
- Pass a Federal (FBI) criminal background check (required);
- Valid driver’s license and auto insurance is (required);
- Possess skills and ability to work successfully with the unique needs of youth in care (required);
- Effective communication and problem solving skills (required);
- Ability to work with young people in crisis;
- Can employ professionalism and patience in high stress environments;
- Understanding the importance of flexibility in a job;
- Proven ability to create a system or process when one does not exist;

Work Conditions and Physical Requirements
Shifts include overnight, evening, and early mornings including holidays. This position requires daily interactions with youth experiencing homelessness and with community members, social service providers, and other organizations.. Physical requirements for the position include frequent walking, hearing, seeing, speaking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, grasping, climbing, and repetitive motions. This position requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force to lift, carry, pull, or move objects. Ability to safely drive a 14-passenger van is strongly preferred.

Salary/Compensation and Benefits
- Starting hourly wage of $18.00 per hour;
- 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday;
- Within 30 days, employer pays medical (90%), dental (90%), and vision (90%) insurance;
- Eligible to receive up to a 5% raise based on annual performance review;
- 25 days of paid time off granted immediately, increasing by 5 days every 2 years;
- 2 hours of paid sick leave accrued for every 40 hours worked, with up to 80 hours eligible for annual rollover.
