The Alameda Food Bank is searching for an experienced leader passionate about ending food insecurity in the City of Alameda. With the help of our four (4) full-time team members, over 200 dedicated volunteers including a supportive and engaged Board of Directors, the Food Bank is seeking an Executive Director who can leverage their leadership expertise to provide healthy and culturally sensitive nourishment to those who need it in our diverse island city community.

The Alameda Food Bank (AFB) began operating in 1977 from a closet at Twin Towers Methodist Church providing monthly emergency food to an average of ten local families in need. Today, we serve nearly 6,000 food insecure individuals in the City of Alameda. Through our all-choice Island Community Market, the AFB provides free groceries to those that live, work, or go to school on the Island. An average family can receive over half of their monthly groceries. Last year we distributed nearly 2 million pounds of food to sustain our community!

The Executive Director is responsible for the development and implementation of programs and services to meet the needs of food-insecure residents of the City of Alameda. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director manages operations, finance, administration including HR and IT, and community relations for a $3.5M organization. Responsibilities of this position include achieving organizational goals set in partnership with the Board, providing direct supervision of full- and part-time staff, as well as overall leadership of a large group of volunteers.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

A successful candidate can demonstrate many or all the following attributes:

  • Minimum of three (3) years of leadership experience at the director or chief level in an organization with at least $3.5M in operating expenses.
  • Demonstrated business acumen and results-orientation in a similar environment of transferrable scope and/or complexity, including familiarity with budgeting, financial management and oversight, operations, or organizational development to manage fiscal and fiduciary accountability.
  • Experience managing at least (3) mid-level direct reports.
  • Experience creating and executing multi-year, multi-stakeholder strategic plans to sustainably increase capacity and impact across an organization.
  • Experience or exposure to board governance.
  • Experience building and sustaining relationships with many constituencies, both internal and external, including government agencies and funding sources, and the media.
  • Demonstrated success with donors and closing significant gifts.
  • Ability to attract, hire, lead, and inspire top talent; track record of empowering a diverse group of professionals, fostering teamwork, and amplifying the work of others.
  • Excellent communication, media relations and public speaking skills, and a compelling and credible public presence, to advance the Food Bank’s work.
  • Demonstrated success building positive, effective, and collaborative cultures and representative teams that embrace diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Skilled at influencing and motivating others toward reaching organizational goals.
  • Agility to maintain a nimble organization that can sustain changing external forces (e.g., COVID-19 pandemic)
  • Entrepreneurial orientation and thought leadership to recognize future trends and new opportunities.
  • Computer proficient; skilled in basic office applications and database management.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous leadership experience in a social-services or client-facing nonprofit organization. Food Banking experience is a plus.
  • Previous experience in the food retail, wholesale, or manufacturing industries.
  • Experience integrating diversity, equity, and inclusion principles into organizational decision-making.
  • Current California driver’s license with an insurable driving record. Able and willing to occasionally drive Sprinter-size vehicles.
  • Current forklift certification or be willing & able to earn within (30) days of hire.
  • ServSafe certification or be willing & able to earn within thirty (30) days of hire.
  • Formal college-level education and/or certification in business management, nonprofit management, or supply chain operations.
  • Bilingual in Cantonese, Mandarin, or Spanish languages.

Physical Requirements

This position is in an open warehouse environment and requires working for a full shift while exposed to seasonal weather temperatures. Able to perform the following duties with or without accommodation:

  • Participate or assist in physical tasks and activities which include but are not limited to bending, reaching, lifting, pushing, pulling, kneeling, squatting, stooping, and reaching above shoulder height to move product and equipment more than 60 lbs.
  • Work daily in a warehouse environment with temperatures ranging from minus 2 degrees in our cold storage units to above 90 degrees.
  • Traverse the warehouse floor frequently throughout the day to execute duties.
  • Stand/sit for the duration of the scheduled shift.
  • Able to operate computer and mobile devices.
  • Mobility to respond to moving vehicles, equipment, and loud noises/sounds typical in a warehouse setting.
  • Sit at a desk, conference room or workstation for more than three (3) hours at a time.
  • Travel to local events for meetings with external stakeholders.
  • Communicate in clear speaking voice in person, before large audiences and over audio or video-based communications applications (e.g., phone, Zoom).

Compensation & Benefits

This is a full-time, exempt position working Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with occasional evening and weekend hours (40 hours per week). The salary range for this position is $118,235 - $147,794 annualized, depending on experience. AFB offers a competitive benefit package including:

  • Medical/Dental/Vision Coverage: AFB pays 100% of employee and 50% of dependent premiums for medical, dental and vision coverage on our Kaiser Gold base plan and optional buy-up to our Blue Shield PPO plan.
