GENERAL PURPOSE
Performs a variety of working level, complex technical duties working directly with client installations, maintenance and operation of the Mapleton City fiber optic backbone.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Under the direction of the Electrical and Communication Technician Lead
or Mapleton City Network Director, this position will work directly with client installations, maintenance and operation of the Mapleton City fiber optic backbone.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
E&C Technicians installs, maintain, and repair electrical and fiber optic communications equipment. This position requires a working knowledge and aptitude of computers, electrical power installations and network communications. Technicians must be proficient in fiber optic installations and splicing.
The work of an E&C Technicians can often be physically demanding. E&C Techs must be willing to work on call when required, able to work from a ladder, lift heavy materials and operate heavy equipment. Technicians must be proficient in operating services vehicles, small utility boom trucks, and work near high voltage electrical components.
- Repair of Outside Plant (OSP) and Network Operation Center (NOC) connections and installation.
- Conducts power supply maintenance. Sets up new nodes including but not limited to pulling wire, fusion splicing fiber and setting up Active Ethernet Nodes.
- Install, operate, and maintain overhead and underground Fiber optic and low voltage power system. The system includes, but is not limited to, fiber optics cable; enclosures; connectors; terminators; boxes(overhead and underground); and splicing.
- Will install messenger cable, anchors and related hardware and equipment. Installation of underground fiber cable and boxes according to proper codes and standards.
- Professional positive attitude with good communication skills. Ability to be on-call as necessary.
- Climbs poles and towers as needed in the normal performance of duties. Proficient in operation of bucket trucks and cable pullers.
- Works from drawings and specifications and uses measuring and testing instruments as needed in the operation of Mapleton’s fiber optic power and cable system.
- Ability to install, maintain and troubleshoot headend electrical and communications equipment.
E&C Technician Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED.
- In some cases, candidates must have an associate degree in a related field.
- Knowledge of fiber optic splicing and testing, field laptop computers, communication end equipment, hand tools, and utility Outside Plant (OSP) cable installations.
- Must be able to operate electronic test equipment (fusion splicers, optical time domain reflectometers (OTDR) and general multimeters.)
- Awareness of national, state, and local electrical and communication codes.
- Motivated self-starter with strong verbal and communication skills.
- E&C technician must also be able to trouble shoot power and communication equipment. Must be comfortable taking direction and making decisions based on technical documents, such as blueprints and schematics.
Customer Relations: Responds to residents and business owners concerning internet speeds and level of service they are purchasing.
Performs related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
_1. Education and Experience:
_A. Graduation from high school; AND
B. Two (2) years of responsible experience performing electrical and communication installations; OR
C. An equivalent combination of education or experience.
2. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Must be able to operate service trucks and utility construction equipment.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Must demonstrate proficiency in using field laptop computers and network maintenance instrumentation.
Proficient in Microsoft Word, and Excel. Must be willing to train and learn utility system maintenance programs as needed.
3. Special Qualifications:
Must be willing to work on call.
Must possess a valid Utah Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
May be required to be or become Cisco CCNA, Nokia/Alcatel or NRSI certified.
May be required to be or become Fiber Optic Technician II certified.
4. Work Environment:
Tasks require a variety of physical demanding activities such as climbing poles and towers, walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, which generally require muscular strain, i.e., work from a ladder, lift heavy materials and operate heavy equipment, i.e., small utility boom trucks. Works near hazards related to high voltage electrical components. Job functions normally require talking, hearing and seeing.
Common eye, hand, finger dexterity required for most essential functions. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, analytical thinking and creative problem solving. Regular exposure to seasonal elements and weather extremes.
