Position Title: Field Assistant
Reports To: Board of Commissioners Employment Status: Seasonal
The Lorain County Commissioners Human Resources Department is now accepting applications for the position of the field assistant, Lorain County Storm Water Management District.
Salary: $15-$18/ hour depending on qualifications
-Hours worked per a week will depend on weather and workflow but range from 25-40 hours per a week
Season Dates: May 1, 2023- October 1, 2023
Duties:
1. Work outdoors in ALL weather with possible exposure to biting/ stinging plants and insects.
2. Perform outfall screening of pipes and ditches throughout Lorain County Storm Water District’s designated MS4 areas.
3. Properly collect water samples from pipes, rivers, streams, and other sampling locations as necessary.
4. Process water samples using laboratory equipment such as colorimeters, turbidity meters, beakers and other glassware.
5. Weed whipping and herbicide spraying as assigned.
6. Investigations and Inspections of waterways such as ditches, rivers, stormwater infrastructure, BMPs, construction sites, and flooding complaints.
7. Accurately fill out data sheets and write reports.
8. Record amount of herbicide used, per site, maintain accurate weather data as required by law.
9. Participate in outreach events and interact in a friendly and professional manner with the public and other agencies.
10. Perform all work in a safe and efficient manner, wearing proper personal protective equipment (PPE) when required.
Education: High school Diploma/ GED
-Preferred: Some college
Required Qualifications
1. Must be at least 18 years old.
2. Valid Ohio Driver’s License
3. Must be a U.S. citizen or legal resident with ability to work in the U.S.
4. Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
5. Basic mathematics skills
6. Detail oriented, organized, and ability to multitask
7. Strong writing, analytical, and communication skills
8. Ability to work as a team player and take direction
9. Ability to work outside in all weather for extended periods of time in many types of terrain.
10. Ability to stand, kneel, bend, walk repeatedly for extended periods of time and lift and carry up to 40 pounds short distances.
Preferred Qualifications
1. Currently enrolled or recent graduate of a higher education program in Biology, Chemistry, Natural Resources, or Environmental Field.
2. Ability to read and understand maps/satellite imagery and compass direction
3. Ohio Department of Agriculture Trained Service Persons letter. (Will train if required.)
4. Basic chemistry or laboratory skills.
5. Identification of native and/or non-native species
6. Experience with field work and safety practices.
7. First Aid/CPR certification
