Role Summary
The Financial Counselor will ensure that all processes related to insurance eligibility and verification are performed to be able to have an individual patient financial meeting to discuss any patient financial responsibilities. This meeting will be held with all patients during the initial weeks of treatment and will result in the collection of patient due amounts in full or the establishment of a patient payment plan, per company policy.
This role will primarily be based in Thousand Oaks but will also require coverage of our clinics in Ventura and Simi Valley.
Your key responsibilities:
- Meets with patients to explain cost of treatment, insurance coverage, and patient financial responsibility.
- Coordinates proper insurance verification information/documentation of patient’s insurance, to be used to estimate the patient’s financial responsibility.
- Calculates a standard estimate that includes CPT codes and standard units based on a normal course of treatment for the particular diagnosis, including allowable costs based on MD treatment plan, and script.
- Responsible for monitoring and collecting the financial balances owed by our patients during their course of treatment.
- Verifies insurance benefits with patients and update company financial records accordingly.
- Reviews the patient’s services for diagnosis and appropriate insurance coverage.
- Reviews all payment / financial options. (Financial hardships / Charity, Coordinating Medicaid applications w/ Trinity, Special arrangement options, Payments plans, etc.).
- Assists patients with questions regarding billing and insurance payments.
- Develops a daily accounts receivable report that will be forwarded to the front office staff detailing the amount of money to collect from each patient.
- Confirms demographic information; explain insurance benefits to patient, reviewing their financial responsibility, obtain necessary consent form signatures, including HIPAA policy.
- Identifies delinquent account balances in accordance with the patient’s treatment plan or with ongoing account balances and make arrangements to meet with them prior to their visit to resolve balances due.
- Assists in collection procedures training of front office personnel.
- Maintains attendance according to scheduled days and hours and appropriate dress and appearance standards, according to company policy.
- Attends mandatory company training sessions as required by state/federal law where applicable.
In addition, you need to develop strong external relationships with various individuals, agencies & key stakeholders.
Experience and skills:
- Two or more years’ experience in medical office setting.
- Strong knowledge of medical terminology as well as ICD-10 and CPT codes.
- Ability to travel to local offices in a geographic market.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Detail oriented with good organizational skills.
- Work under limited supervision with ability to understand and meet department productivity standards.
- Maintain a positive and respectful attitude.
- Bi-lingual preferred
Qualifications and Knowledge:
- Two or more years’ experience in medical office setting.
- Strong knowledge of medical terminology as well as ICD-10 and CPT codes.
Other requirements for this role:
- Experience in insurance requirements, medical terminology, ICD-9 and CPT coding.
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Experience with working in a healthcare field, preferably in a clinical setting or corporate billing office.
- Valid Driver’s License is necessary in the event the Financial Counselor supports multiple offices
The salary range for California residents is $19.00 to $28.51 hourly.
