East Los Angeles College (ELAC) is seeking applicants for a tenure-track position in Sociology (10-month annual contract). The assignment may include teaching at the South Gate campus and high schools in the service areas, and/or evening and weekend classes.


ABOUT THE SOCIOLOGY DISCIPLINE

ELAC Sociology is one of six academic disciplines that comprise the Social Sciences Department. The sociology discipline consists of 6 full-time faculty and more than 25 part-time faculty. The sociology discipline prides itself in its faculty diversity and inclusion. Members of the discipline faculty represent different racial, ethnic, religious, and sexual orientations who serve our diverse student body. The sociology discipline embodies the institution’s goal of increasing student success and academic excellence through student-centered instruction, student-centered support services, and dynamic technologies.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The department offers a full range of courses beginning at 7:10 a.m. and ending at 10:00 p.m. Some evening and/or Saturday assignments may be required. Faculty must be available to teach anytime within those hours.
  • The assignment requires teaching at the South Gate Educational Center.
  • The teaching load is 15 hours per week, plus regular weekly office hours.
  • Participation in department and college governance activities through committee service and/or other appropriate activities.
  • Teach courses such as Introduction to Sociology (Soc 001); American Social Problems (Soc 002); and Race and Ethnic Relations (Soc 011).
  • Participate in the evaluation, revision and development of the curriculum, and student learning outcomes.
  • Participate in the development of resources, materials, and strategies, including using multimedia technology, to teach students in a multicultural environment.
  • Participate in campus and department professional development and student enrichment activities in accordance with institutional guidelines.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree in Sociology OR
  • Bachelor's degree in Sociology and a Master's degree in anthropology, psychology, social work, or any ethnic studies;
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disabled, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff members.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENT

A medical evaluation indicating fitness to work in the district is required for new employees at the expense of the candidate.


Pursuant to LACCD Board of Trustee's Policy 2900, all students and employees must be fully vaccinated or have an approved exemption. LACCD employees are required to provide their vaccination status in compliance with the LACCD Board of Trustees’ policy. Newly hired employees will be required to provide their vaccination status prior to starting a position or, at the latest, by their position start date.


DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Evidence of successful classroom experience at the community college or university level.
  • Experience in teaching Crime & Delinquency; Juvenile Delinquency; Marriage & Family, Human Sexuality, and Introduction to Statistics in Sociology.
  • Willingness to teach off-site dual enrollment courses.
  • Possess an excellent academic record that indicates a strong background in sociology and related fields.
  • Exhibit and express a commitment to remain current in knowledge of recent developments in sociology.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching community college students.
  • Flexibility to teach a wide variety of classes as schedules, students' interests and institutional commitments require.
  • Experience designing and teaching curricula that incorporate best practices and are culturally responsive to the needs and interests of underprepared and/or historically underrepresented students.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with first-generation college students using multi-modal approaches and student-centered pedagogy, including involvement with first year experience programs.
  • Experience with or a willingness to develop and teach courses online or using other distance-learning;
  • Experience in the development, assessment, and evaluation of student learning outcomes.
  • Willingness to participate actively in departmental committees and projects as well as college-wide committee work and collegial governance.
  • Demonstrated ability to work closely and collaboratively with students and colleagues in support of a positive, productive, and professional academic environment.
  • Ability to contribute to the overall mission of the college.


SALARY AND BENEFITS:

Under the 2020-2023 AFT Agreement, the salaries for entry-level positions, which include long-term substitutes, range from $66,220 to $103,100. The Doctoral differential is $418 per month. The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) provides fringe benefits including a choice of dental and medical plans, voluntary life insurance, income protection insurance and vision care. Optional teaching assignments may include winter and summer intersessions. In addition to the State Teachers’ Retirement System (STRS), employees have the option to participate in a 403b plan.

All degrees must be granted by an accredited college or university in the United States, or transcripts from foreign institutions must be submitted with an approved evaluation of equivalency from a foreign evaluation service approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. Foreign Evaluation Agencies Degrees, foreign degree evaluation and/or, if needed, an approved formal equivalency must be completed at the time of filing an application.

EVALUATION PROCEDURES:

1. A college selection committee will review all complete applications received. The committee screening will involve an evaluation of the candidate’s qualifications in the areas of training, experience, and personal fitness as determined from the application package and recommendations from referents.

2. Following the committee screening, selected candidates will be invited for an interview and classroom teaching demonstration.

3. Based upon the committee recommendation, finalists will interview with the president and vice president, who will make the final selection.


Note: Final hiring will depend on availability of funding. The District does not provide expense reimbursements for those invited to interviews.
