The Elementary School Principal is responsible for using leadership, supervisory, and administrative skills to ensure a high-quality education for all students, and to create and sustain a positive, rigorous, and collaborative learning environment involving faculty, staff, students, parents, and community. He/She supervises all assigned personnel within the elementary school and reports to the Superintendent of Schools. Performance responsibilities include: 1.MANAGING AND MAINTAINING A LEARNING ENVIRONMENT IN THE SCHOOL a.Establishes and maintains an effective learning climate in the school; b.Leads in the development, determination of appropriateness, implementation, and monitoring of the instructional program, including assignment and promotion of students, administration of special services, assessment of student learning, and evaluation of the curriculum; c.Oversees guidelines for appropriate student behavior and for maintaining student discipline; d.Assists in the development, revision, implementation, and evaluation of the curriculum, in cooperation with the Superintendent's Office and Curriculum leadership personnel; e.Schedules classes within established guidelines to meet student needs; f.Initiates, designs, implements, and supervises programs to meet specific goals and needs of the school.2.MANAGING SCHOOL PERSONNEL a.Directs all organization, supervision, and administration within the elementary school; b.Orients newly assigned staff members and assists in their development, as appropriate; c.Supervises and evaluates all staff members regarding their individual and group performance; d.Assists in the recruitment of all school building personnel; e.Responsible for selection of finalist candidates in all personnel matters at the elementary school; f.Recommends, according to established procedures, the continuation of teacher employment; g.Conducts staff meetings to discuss matters relative to the school and to keep members informed of policy changes, new programs, etc; h.Establishes programs necessary for the professional growth of the staff.3.MANAGING THE SCHOOL a.Supervises the school's teaching and learning process; b.Assumes responsibility for the development and administration of the school safety plan, including planning and supervising fire drills and emergency preparedness programs; c.Supervises the daily use of the school facilities for both academic and other non-academic purposes, including co-curricular programs; d.Knows and follows appropriate Massachusetts Law, School Committee Policies, and Administrative Procedures relative to personnel, instructional programs, student attendance and safety, and other administrative functions; e.Budgets school time to provide for the efficient conduct of school instruction and business; f.Approves the master teaching schedule and any special assignments, including cafeteria, co-curricular, transportation, specialists, evening meetings, as well as daily instructional periods; g.Prepares and submits the school's budgetary requests, orders instructional supplies and equipment, monitors expenditures of funds, and oversees the general condition of the building; h.Prepares or supervises the preparation of reports, records, and lists required or appropriate to the school's administration; i.Keeps the Superintendent informed of events and activities of an unusual nature related to the operation of the school; j.Provides for adequate inventories of property under his/her jurisdiction and for the security and accountability for that property; k.Assumes any other responsibilities as assigned by the Superintendent.4.MANAGING COMMUNITY AND ADMINISTRATIVE RELATIONS a.Maintains active and positive relationships with students and parents; b.Assumes responsibility for his/her own professional growth and development through memberships and participation in professional organizations; c.Keeps abreast of changes and developments in the profession by attending professional meetings, reading professional journals and other publications, and discussing problems of mutual interest with others in the field; d.Attends special events held to recognize student achievement, and attends school-sponsored activities and functions; e.Cooperates with college and university officials regarding teacher training and preparation; f.Participates in Administrative Council meetings and provides assistance in the negotiations process, when needed; g.Establishes and maintains a high standard of public relations through official correspondence, newsletters, and availability to parents and other members of the community; h.Serves as Co-Chair on School Council, acts as liaison between the school and community, interpreting activities and policies of the school and encouraging community participation in school life; i.Attends other committee meetings as directed by the Superintendent or his designee.The responsibilities and duties listed are illustrations of the various types of work performed.
