Herron Classical Schools welcomes applications for Latin teachers who value collaborative, inclusive teaching. Herron Classical Schools is a community of scholars that advances timeless ideas and content, builds a culture of respect and trust, and engages in an urban environment in order to prepare students to be world-class citizens. World Languages is one of the five core classes at Herron, with students required to take Latin I and II in 9th and 10th grade. Students may switch to Spanish and/or French in 11th and 12th grades (or add as electives in 9th and 10th grade), or may continue their studies of Latin through AP Latin V, with Attic Greek I offered to upper-level Latin students as an additional elective (contingent upon demand).
Latin I and II uses de Romanis as the foundation of the curriculum. Latin III transitions to adapted Latin with Ritchie's Fabulae Faciles while Latin IV is split into separate Prose (Pliny, Seneca, Perpetua) and Poetry (Ovid, Horace, Catullus) courses. AP Latin V follows the AP curriculum of Caesar and Vergil. Attic Greek I uses Athenaze, book I.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- Master's degree in Latin/Classics preferred, but not required.
- Prior teaching experience is valuable but not required.
- Passion for rigorous, inclusive teaching with strong, deep collaboration is required.
LICENSE:
- Latin licensure in Indiana (or transferable) preferred.
- Ability to gain Indiana licensure within two years required.
