The School of College of Engineering, School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science invites applications for two, full-time (1.00
FTE
), 12-month, fixed-term Instructor-Security Operations Mentor positions in the Oregon Research and Teaching Security Operations Center (
ORTSOC
).
The primary responsibility of this position is to provide cybersecurity instruction to students in the school of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS). This includes hands-on instruction of students performing their clinical rotations for experiential learning at Oregon Research and Teaching Security Operations Center (ORTSOC), a working Security Operations Center providing student-led managed security services to underserved organizations across the region as part of the experiential learning portion of the cybersecurity curriculum, in addition to traditional classroom and Ecampus teaching and development, assessment, and improvement of cybersecurity courses. Additionally, this position will prepare and maintain the instructional environment.

75% Cybersecurity Instruction
Provide practical instruction to ORTSOC students performing security operations services through this hands-on, experiential learning program, developing the necessary processes and structures to ensure student success. Develop, assess and continuosly improve the curriculum for ORTSOC relevant courses and ORTSOC rotations, and participate as a member of a team that creates and sustains a collaborative, supportive, inclusive, and nurturing environment for students and employees. Help facilitate graduate student research in security operations and management. Prepare and teach cybersecurity or related courses within the School of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science, either in person on online, per year. Responsibilities include equipping students with the required skill set, assessing student performance, and/or preparing students to be successful leaders in their chosen profession. Instructors may assist in curriculum design and development. Create an inclusive classroom (e.g., mentoring and supporting students from diverse backgrounds, and fostering affirming classroom interactions across different and challenging structural/cultural barriers that limit movement towards social equity in engineering education and practice.)
15% Instructional Environment Preparation & Maintenance
Assist the ORTSOC Security Engineer/Architect in the preparation and maintenance of the ORTSOC instructional environment. Enable CyberClinic-centered research by sharing data, providing appropriate access to the CyberClinic environment, and sharing pain points that provide opportunities for innovation.
5% Service
Participate as a collegial member of the unit and perform appropriate service that contributes to the effectiveness of the School, the College, the University, and the profession. Service includes participation in and leadership of School, College, and University committees, attending meetings, and contributing to outreach activities. Participation in service to the profession should be pursued as appropriate.
5% Other Duties as Assigned
Minimum/Required Qualifications
- A Master’s or higher degree in a field relevant to Cybersecurity by the start date of the position.
- 2 years of experience in Cybersecurity Operations.
- Proficiency with current best practices and standards in cybersecurity practice.
- Demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
- Experience mentoring, and facilitating learners.
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions.
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
- A doctoral degree in Computer Science or related fields; or a master’s degree with greater than 5 years experience in cybersecurity practice.
- Relevant certifications such as the CISSP.
- A demonstrable commitment to teaching, mentoring and advising learners.
- Strong technical understanding of a broad range of security concepts and countermeasures including workstation security, perimeter security, identity and access management, applied cryptography, and network security.
This position will occasionally require work outside of standard hours and regional travel. Some work may be performed remotely as agreed upon by the employee and supervisor; however, the position will require an on-campus presence.
