Position Summary
The primary purpose of this position is to assist the principal investigator and other staff in planning, developing and executing scientific research to achieve specific goals as directed in Dr. Randell’s Laboratory. The laboratory is mainly using cell biology approaches to address the pathogenesis, prevention and treatment of several lung diseases. Scientific techniques include but are not limited to: Cell Biology (aseptic technique, tissue culture, FACS); Molecular Biology (protein analysis: isolation/purification, quantification, SDS-PAGE, western blotting, ELISA; nucleic acid analysis: isolation/purification, quantification, agarose gel electrophoresis, qPCR; expression cloning: transformation, transfections, transduction); Microscopy (antibody generation and purification, immunohistochemistry, widefield and confocal microscopy). The employee will participate in animal studies. A partial component of this position is general laboratory management including participation in daily operations including ordering and record keeping and compliance with health and safety procedures. Computer skills include, but not limited to, word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, and presentation software packages.

Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
The Research Technician must be able to accurately carry out a variety of experimental protocols that include isolation and aseptic culture of various rodent and human cell types; isolation and detection of whole cell and cytosolic/nuclear proteins by western blots and ELISAs. In addition to having competency in the use of multiple types of laboratory equipment, the individual must be able to use computer software associated with the analysis and presentation of data (i.e., statistical, imaging software, etc.). The Research Technician must be facile with sterile tissue culture technique and possess exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills. Excellent communication skills are necessary to prepare data for presentation, to interact with students/PI’s from other laboratories and to work closely with other researchers. Some training and supervision of students or new members of the laboratory staff will be required.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Applicant should have the ability to perform computer data entry and data base organization. Learn new techniques and derive information and novel procedures from the literature. Individuals should be experienced with, and/or able to be trained to work with mice, including detailed tissue dissection and creation of primary cell cultures.
