For Permanent Appointment: Reachable on the Civil Service List for Beginning Office Assistant OR current NYS Employee with one year or more of permanent or contingent-permanent status as an Office Assistant 1 (any parenthetic) OR in a position allocated to a grade 6 or above and eligible for transfer via Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law.

For Provisional Appointment: There are no minimum education or experience requirements.

Note: If you are appointed provisionally, you must take the next scheduled Civil Service examination for this title and your score must be reachable on the resulting eligible list before you can be permanently appointed. If you do not pass the examination or achieve a reachable score, you may not be retained.

This is an 18-month traineeship, starting salary equated to SG-6 ($34,152); advance after twelve months to SG-8 ($38,073), then advance after 18 months to the end of traineeship SG-9 ($40,193). Candidates must demonstrate adequate keyboarding skills by prior service in a keyboarding title or successful completion of a keyboarding performance test (30 WPM WITH 96% ACCURACY). (Relevant for both permanent and provisional appointments).


Duties Description
This position is in the Sex Offender Management Bureau in Syracuse.

DUTIES:
  • Produce a variety of legal work, legal pleadings, legal papers, correspondence, memoranda, forms and other Sex Offender Management Bureau documents for attorneys and legal assistants in the SOMB from dictated, handwritten or electronic copy.
  • Verify citation format and other legal references and apply the rules of the court with regard to service and filing.
  • Maintain and organize the contents of office files, including individual attorney case files.
  • Type, organize, scan, photocopy and assemble packages of legal documents and arrange for them to be mailed, sent by overnight delivery, faxed, e-mailed (for electronic filing/electronic service), or personally served.
  • Enter, search for, and retrieve information stored on OAG and bureau databases.
  • Prioritize work ensuring procedural and filing deadlines are met.
  • Know the calendar of his/her assigned attorney, respond to inquiries about the attorney’s schedule, whereabouts, and the locations of his/her files.
  • Make travel arrangements for his/her attorneys, including lodging and transportation reservations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
