Job description
This part-time position is responsible for packaging material to ship to other libraries, repairing and organizing packaging material, occassionally assisting with shelving periodicals and other library material, interacting with library patrons in a courteous, professional manner. The person filling this position must be able to put materials in order alphabetically and numerically using decimal numbers.
This position requires the following physical abilities: to handle, lift, move, shift library materials weighing up to 25 lbs; to wheel book-carts weighing up to 125 lbs; to operating a keyboard; to stand, sit, kneel, walk, stoop, reach repeatedly throughout the workday.
The hours are: Part-time, 10 hours per week between Wednesday through Saturday.
All library positions require the following criminal background and child abuse clearances: Report of criminal history from the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP); Child Abuse History Clearance from the Department of Human Services (Child Abuse); and Fingerprint based federal criminal history submitted through the Pennsylvania State Police or its authorized agent (FBI).
Criminal background check is required.
State Child Abuse Clearance is required.
All employees of the Chester County Library are considered a mandated reporter of suspected child abuse under the Child Protective Services Law (Title 23 Pa. C.S.A. Chapter 63).
Essential duties, tasks and accountabilities will vary by library unit and may include the following:
- Shelve library materials (books, magazines, audio-visual and other materials, etc.) in proper order.
- Perform shelf reading to ensure materials are in proper order.
- Shelf check overdue items.
- Truck or carry material between shelving area and issue desk.
- Clip pre-marked articles from periodicals.
- Perform general clerical duties such as taking messages, filing, and typing.
- Answer in-person inquiries, help customers locate needed materials, and refer customers to other appropriate assistance.
- Answer directional questions.
- Lift and arrange library furniture, equipment and facilities for use by various library programs and restore the rooms or locations to an orderly condition following their use.
- Assist in other room activities as needed.
- Maintain shelves (dust or clean).
- Search library for misplaced books, materials, and equipment and return materials and equipment to proper location.
- Perform other duties, tasks and special projects, as required.
Qualifications / Requirements:
- High School education (often in progress).
- Minimum High School Junior, 15 years old.
- Must be able to courteously refer clients to the appropriate service desk.
- Must be able to file materials within the appropriate classification scheme.
- Ability to learn Dewey Decimal system and other library filing systems.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to compare numerical material for accuracy.
- Ability to operate microfilm equipment and audiovisual instruments.
- Ability to keep records.
- Criminal background check.
- Child abuse clearance.
Preferred Skills, Knowledge & Experience:
- Ability to develop a working knowledge about the organization, and care of library materials, services and programs.
- Ability to communicate effectively (verbally, in writing or by listening).
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English in order to perform the duties of the position.
- Ability to read with comprehension.
- Knowledge of general vocabulary, spelling and standard English grammar.
- Knowledge of filing procedures, including cross-file indexing.
Computer Skills:
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have:
