Job Description of a Psychotherapist

A Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) holds a master’s degree in psychology and works to help individuals through both direct clinical counseling and more traditional human services work like social justice advocacy. A Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) or Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) would hold a master’s in counseling or psychology and concentrate on using psychotherapy and individual interventions to help patients through mental wellness issues.

Essential Functions of a Psychotherapist

• Participates in care planning in collaboration with the patient and healthcare team to identify effective interventions that will help the patient meet rehabilitation, treatment goals, and improve quality of life.
• Provides ongoing education to patient/family
• Develops detailed and error-free case notes involving mental health and risk assessments.
• Adjusts treatment plans in compliance with changes in the status of the patient.
• Provides supportive and goal directed counseling to patients
• Conduct virtual visits as necessary to assess patient needs and implement plan of care
• Perform other duties as assigned
• Heightened empathy and compassion
• Excellent communication and customer service skills

Competencies in Psychotherapy

Required Education and Experience of a Psychotherapist:

• Master’s degree from an Accredited institution LPC, LSW, LPCC's or LISW
• Active and unrestricted state-specific licensure required in the State of Ohio
• Excellent communication skills: ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing to patients, family members and various professionals.
• Basic computer skills and understanding.
