JOB SUMMARY
Swedish Hospital Graduate Medical Education department provides training, in association and cooperation with its affiliated participating institutions, in graduate medical education programs that meet the standards established by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), American Osteopathic Association and its Residency Review Committees. Completion of the training qualifies the participant for certification by a specialty board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) & the American Osteopathic Association (AOA)
Duties and Responsibilities
RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Functions
- Demonstrates a commitment to the mission of Swedish Hospital and a patient service orientation that adheres to all responsibilities and standards established by the Hospital.
- Participate in the clinical evaluation and care of patients in a variety of patient care settings with sufficient frequency to achieve the competencies required by their discipline under the direct supervision of the attending staff. Residents may write orders and progress notes in patient charts, although attending physicians retain responsibility for the care of patients seen by residents and must review the care of their patients.
- Perform procedures, which are specified by each program director, under the direct supervision of attending physician. Resident may only perform those procedures for which the attending physician has privileges. Once the resident has performed the appropriate number of procedures in a competent fashion the program director will provide notification that the resident is eligible to be certified to perform the procedure without direct supervision.
- Assume progressive responsibility for patient care activities according to resident’s level of education, ability and experience. The program director and the attending staff will determine the resident’s level of responsibility and autonomy.
- Communicate effectively with their supervising attending regarding the findings of their evaluation, physical examination, interpretation of diagnostic tests, and intended interventions on a continuous basis.
- Participate fully in the educational and scholarly activities of the program and, as required, assume responsibility for teaching and supervising other residents and students.
- Participate in appropriate institutional committees and councils whose actions affect their education and/or patient care including, but not limited to quality assurance and quality improvement activities.
- Develop a personal program of learning to foster continued professional growth with guidance from the teaching staff.
- Abide by all Hospital policies and procedures, including the provisions of the GME Policy and Procedure Manual, the residency training programs and the regulations of any affiliated institution to which the resident may be assigned
PATIENT CARE/AGE SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND QUALIFICATIONS
The incumbent must posses the ability to deal effectively all age groups from infants to senior citizens.
QUALIFICATIONS/BASIC JOB REQUIREMENTS
Education:
- A graduate, or pending graduate, of a medical school in the United States or Canada accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, or
- A graduate, or pending graduate, of a college of osteopathic medicine in the United States accredited by the American Osteopathic Association or a
- Graduate of a medical school outside the United States or Canada who meets one of the following qualifications:
- Have received a current valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates prior to appointment
- Have a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a US licensing jurisdiction in which they are trained
- Graduate of a medical school outside the United States that have completed a Fifth Pathway program provide by an LCME accredited medical school
- Have passes USLME or COMLEX part 1 & 2
- Preferably to have graduated medical school within the past 5 years of applying to the residency program.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION
- Current Illinois State Medical License
- Current CPR certification with the American Heart Association or American Red Cross required.
MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CONFLICTS
- Frequent contact with patients, visitors, employers, physician, nurses, medical students and insurance companies.
ENVIRONMENT
- Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting of patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination 100% of the time.
- Involves standing and walking 50% of the time. Sitting 50% of the time.
- Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 lbs. 5% of the time.
- Requires normal visual acuity and hearing 100% of the time.
- Potential exposure to airborne diseases: 100% of the time
- Potential risk of blood borne exposure: 100% of the time

Computer system access is assigned based on manager access level request and on the minimum necessary as described in this job described in this job description.
