The Microinjectionist performs the processes necessary for successful microinjection and supporting surgical techniques in the Genetic Engineering Technologies (GET) team.
This position has a significant and positive impact on the GET team’s scientific capabilities, their ability to reduce costs, increase throughput and improve service quality.
Key Responsibilities:
- Execute embryo manipulation and microinjection protocols: Perform highly reproducible embryo manipulation techniques used to create animal models, such as embryo harvest, culture, blastocyst and pronuclear zygote injection techniques and preimplantation embryo electroporation using GLP and adherence to SOP. Accurate record keeping (electronic & paper) for project reporting and management is critical to success. Contribute to facility maintenance such as reagent preparation, supply ordering/processing, equipment repair and other laboratory duties assigned as necessary.
- Small Mammal Surgery: Perform surgical procedures, including oviduct and uterine embryo transfer, vasectomy, hysterectomy in accordance with SOP.
- Colony Maintenance: Participate in conventional and barrier mouse colony maintenance as needed to complete assigned projects. These include setting up breeder cohorts, maintaining colonies comprised of various mouse strains, identifying and evaluating pregnancy status, chimera assessment, cross-fostering and other related duties as necessary. The incumbent will participate in scheduled weekend rotations to administer hormone injections.
- Data entry/Metrics: Compile assigned data in a timely manner for project status updates, billing and process improvement analysis. Incumbent will readily report protocol deviations (self/non-self) to ensure high quality data is produced from the Microinjection Service in GET. Full competency in usage of GET Project tracking system, and associated data entry, associated with Microinjection-Progeny assessment specific tasks.

Requirements:
- Knowledge of biological sciences as would normally be acquired through a Baccalaureate degree or equivalent experience with coursework in Developmental Biology, Classical and Molecular Genetics, and Molecular Biology.
- 2 years of experience in a laboratory setting creating transgenic and targeted mutant mice or minimally performing detailed rodent embryo manipulation.
- Ability to prioritize work assignments and work flow.
- Demonstrated enthusiasm to work in a dynamic, team-oriented, deadline driven, high-performance, technical environment.
- Knowledge and successful practice of protocols required for work in high barrier vivarium space.
- Expertise in microinjection or supporting surgical techniques preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to perform biomethods, such as intraperitoneal & subcutaneous injections.
- Ability to troubleshoot and maintain required laboratory equipment.
- Ability to operate a variety of computer hardware and software applications.
- Ability to quickly and accurately gather/interpret data, compile information, and prepare reports.
- Ability to communicate effectively (verbally and in writing) to ensure accurate exchange of information.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule including weekends and holidays when required.
