Job Overview
The Senior Process Engineer will oversee the process engineering and piping system designs for the company’s ongoing renewable energy projects while emphasizing safety, quality, budget, and on-time completion. The position requires implementing sound management and engineering principles to ensure project designs are at the industry’s cutting edge. An ability to lead a multidisciplinary team, mentor junior level staff members, and communicate effectively is of the utmost importance to this position.
Reports To
The Process Engineer will report to the Engineering Department leadership staff.
Hybrid Remote/Office
Hybrid Remote/Office based out of Lenoir, NC (Plant), Rougemont, NC (Plant), Malvern, IA (Plant), Sisters, OR (Headquarters), or Denver, CO (Satellite Office).
Full remote option available for Senior Process Engineers with at least 10+ year experience.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Oversee and prepare, drawings and specifications for permitting, estimating, and construction. Including:
- Energy and mass balances.
- Process Documentation (BFD, PFD, and P&ID)
- Process Narratives
- Process Simulations
- Specifications for all plant equipment including valves, pumps, compressors, heat exchangers, tanks, relief valves, instruments, and piping systems.
- Mentor and support process engineering team members, providing design oversight and feedback. Appropriately delegating work to promote career growth and ensure on-time delivery of projects.
- Coordinate Factory Acceptance Testing and Site Acceptance Testing of process equipment.
- Facilitate HAZOP, PHA, and design review studies.
- Take full responsibility for the safety, budget, and schedule of assigned projects.
- Support the review and response to contractor RFIs.
- Manage compliance with contractual requirements and specifications on projects.
- Manage and properly document change order activity.
- Collaborate with other engineering disciplines and departments throughout the company.
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of ASME piping and pressure vessel codes, API, ASTM, and other industry standards.
- Seek ways to improve and promote quality, demonstrating accuracy and thoroughness in all work.
- Willingness and ability to respond to urgent issues outside normal business hours.
Minimum Qualifications
- This is a mid to senior level position requiring at a minimum 5 years of process engineering experience for mid-level, and 10+ years’ experience for senior level.
- Experience in one of the following industries: biogas, petrochemical, NGL, natural gas processing, power generation, or other relevant industrial process applications.
- Experience as a process engineer on industrial construction projects valued at $2M to $50MM.
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent) from an accredited university.
- Proficient with software packages such as HYSYS, Aspen, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.), Plant 3D, and BIM.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Engineering discipline from an accredited university.
- Professional Engineer’s license, or ability to get license within 12 months.

Ability to deal with complex problems and present recommendations and findings in a clear, concise format; ability to interact effectively at all levels within and outside of ESI. Ability to communicate effectively with team members, vendors, and clients.
- Quick learner who adapts well to a fast-moving environment and gets things done, combines creativity, problem-solving skills, and a can-do attitude to overcome any obstacle.
- Highly motivated and willing to take on multiple responsibilities at once; strong organizational skills with the ability to multitask in an environment with changing priorities.
- Advanced optimization, trouble shooting, and/or process design skills in a process simulation package.
- Experience in process optimization, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis (RCA) in an energy or manufacturing environment.
- Experience analyzing trends and building reports from a process data historian.
- Experience with process metrics and reporting key performance indicators (KPI).
- Ability to communicate effectively across a broad range of audiences including management, technical/engineering support, and field personnel.
Travel
- Ability and willingness to travel.
- Travel up to 35%
