The Oregon Department of Corrections (ODOC) does not offer visa sponsorship. Within three days of hire, applicants will be required to complete an I-9 and confirm authorization to work in the United States.
The mission of the ODOC is to promote public safety by holding offenders accountable for their actions and reducing the risk of future criminal behavior. In support of this, the Department has deployed an integrated statewide felony offender tracking and management system and other related information systems which include a mission critical, online, real time accounting system (budgeting, purchasing, contracts, accounts payable, manufacturing); an institution staffing application, a mission critical inmate trust accounting system; client/server email systems; a pharmacy system; a decision support system for research and evaluation; and a Service Desk problem tracking system.
These systems are deployed on the Department’s network that extends to all its locations statewide and is comprised of many central and remote servers including an IBM I-Series server, several AIX servers, and numerous other network servers.
These systems are supported and maintained by the IT Services Unit of the Administrative Services Division. To accomplish this, the unit is divided into four sections: Application Services; the section responsible for creating and/or maintaining all software, IT Information Systems; the section responsible for server support, networks and Telephony, Support Services; the section responsible for maintaining the desktop devices used on the networks, and IT Governance and Project Management; the section responsible for the governance and management of IT projects and work efforts.
What does this position do?
This position is a Senior engineer who architects, and administers various aspects of Department of Corrections WAN, WLAN, LAN, VoIP telephony, and firewall systems.
The primary duties of this position are to provide senior network engineer support to Department of Corrections (DOC) staff, Adults-in-Custody (AIC), Community Corrections and other DOC partners.
Design and architecture: As needed model new or restructure existing networks. Research technology and strategies for use at DOC.
Configure: network and firewall systems.
Monitor and troubleshoot: Ensure DOC networks and firewalls are operating optimally, are patched, and in a reliable condition to meet agency requirements. Resolve complex network issues. Partner with various technical and nontechnical partners and stakeholders.
Administrative duties: Review for approval various invoices and purchase orders.
Documentation: Maintain documentation on all network systems.
Occasional contact with AICs at DOC's correctional facilities and worksites.
Overnight in state travel is required.
Minimum Qualifications:
Information Systems Specialist 7
- (a) Six (6) years of information systems experience in:
network engineering supporting LAN, WAN, LWAN ; OR - (b) An Associate's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field, OR completion of a two (2) year accredited vocational training program in information technology or related field; AND four (4) years of information systems experience in information systems experience in supporting firewall systems; OR
- (c) A Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field AND two (2) years of information systems experience in:
information systems in supporting firewall systems; OR - (d) Master's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field may substitute for all of the above.

What are the working conditions?
Extensive work performed on video display terminals. Exposure to adults in custody (AIC) in the workplace. Requires occasional in state overnight travel. Work schedule is driven by user need. May be required to respond after normal business hours for system emergencies. May be assigned on-call rotation or stand- by duties. Employee may work a variety of irregular hours in order to maintain operational systems at DOC facilities. Lifting PCs, terminals, and other computer equipment up to 50 lbs. Remove, replace or upgrade components. Climb ladders as high as 12', bending, crawling, reaching under desks and computer workstations, and physical manipulation of large objects may be required. This position has been approved for 50% hybrid work. In person office work may be completed in enclosed, remote areas of work buildings that may be unfinished and/or infrequently occupied.

Successful candidates for this position must pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) computer and fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility.
