Spence was established in 2000, and is a wholly owned subsidiary of 3173 Limited which also includes Dalriada Trustees, a Professional Pensions Trustee business, and Mantle a leading provider of Software to the Pensions Industry. For over 15 years, Spence & Partners has developed a specialist advisory Practice focussed specifically on third sector organisations, becoming a leading provider in this market sector. We have developed market leading services and a skilled support team to provide advice that makes a real difference to employers in this sector. The Practice primarily advises employers participating in public sector schemes such as LGPS, NHS and Teachers Schemes as well as private sector schemes such as those run by TPT and other multi-employer schemes like USS.
An opportunity has arisen for a suitably skilled individual to take over the leadership of this Practice and further build our offering. The successful candidate will inherit all existing business and client relationships and be provided with support in transitioning these to their leadership.
About You
The suitable candidate should:-
- Have broad industry experience, likely to have been gained from at least 10 years actuarial and/or consultancy experience. Less experience may be considered along with competence validated through assessment
- Be a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries and/or Certified member of the Pensions Management Institute and/or another relevant professional qualification
- Evidence of on-going Continuous Professional Development (CPD) against professional and technical standards
- Have experience of advising clients on both defined benefit and defined contribution schemes
- Have experience working with clientsHave experience working with clients who participate in Local Government and other Public Sector Schemes, and multi-employer schemes such as those operated by TPT Retirement Solutions, USS or similar
- Have experience presenting to Have experience presenting to Employer Boards, Trustees and scheme members.
- Ideally have relationships with key professional bodies Have relationships with key professional bodies and/or be prepared to develop these
- Have extensive knowledge of related legislation and industry practice

Responsibilities & Criteria
Key Responsibilities
Practice Head is a senior role within the business reporting directly to the Spence Board. Key responsibilities include:-

Providing and implementing a vision for the Practice that delivers good outcomes for clients and a strong and sustainable revenue stream for the business.
- The financial performance of the Practice, including input to the Company’s budgeting process and taking actions to maximise the income and profit generated by the Practice
- Generating and managing new business opportunities, including oversight of and input to tender material and presentations
- Identifying and selling additional services that can be provided by the Practice
- Developing and managing key professional relationships in order to generate new business leads for the practice and other areas of the Group.
- Ensuring client delivery quality and maintaining professional standards
- Working effectively with a support team of qualified and part-qualified actuaries, and liaising with other colleagues across the 3173 Group as required.

The role holder will be required to work across the UK.

Working hours:* Monday to Friday, 37.5 hours per week with additional hours as and when required.
All roles are subject to a six-month probationary period and all prospective employees are required to complete an Access NI check.
As part of the pre-hire process the successful candidate will be subject to reference checking security vetting.
