Position Summary:
The Preop-PACU registered nurse in the ambulatory surgery center practices utilizing the nursing process, as defined by the Maryland Nurse Practice Act, and participates as an integral part of the interdisciplinary health care team in providing the highest quality of care to the patient. The Pre-op PACU nurse will work withint the Pre-operative unit, Post Anesthesia Care Unit, and the procedural rooms.

A. Education: Bachelors of Science degree in nursing from an accredited school of nursing required. CAPA (Certified Post Anesthesia Nurse) and/or CPAN (Certified Ambulatory Perianesthesia Nurse) certification preferred. B. Knowledge Advanced knowledge of nursing theory, practice, and research. Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate care to the ages of the patients served in the department. Knowledge of American Society of Perianesthesia Nurses (ASPAN) nursing standards and practice recommendations C. Skills Knowledge of required patient elements for surgery(ie: H&P, lab work, EKG, clearances) per AnesthesiaGuidelines. Knowledge of post-anesthesia discharge requirements. Demonstrates competency in patient monitoring as required per each phase of care (this may include
hemodynamic status, airway management, pain management, and all elements related to clearing
patients for discharge). Knowledgeable about preparations for discharge and discharge teaching to include patients and when
applicable family and/or significant others. Demonstrates safe handling of sharps, specimens, and other procedure specific supplies and equipment. Computer proficiency and technical aptitude with the ability to utilize one or more of the following: Microsoft Word, Power Point, Excel & Outlook; SAP, EPIC EMR, and JHMI My Learning. Utilizes highly effective verbal, non-verbal, written communication and interpersonal skills to establish effective working relationships. Problem-solve and appropriately confront issues. Create a climate that fosters compassionate care, innovation, cooperation, collaboration, and teamwork. Use automated systems to access, transmit, and produce information. (e.g. e-mail, spreadsheet, Inter/intranet). Plan, organize, prioritize, and manage work. Adapt to rapidly changing priorities and environment. D. Required Licensure, Certification, Etc. Registered nurse licensure in the State of Maryland.

PALS-Pediatric Advanced Life Support and ACLS-Advanced Cardiac Life Support upon start. E. Work Experience 1 years of experience as registered nurse required. 2 years of experience preferred. F. Machines, Tools, Equipment: General office and communication equipment. Unit specific equipment.
