Occupational Summary
Nicholas School of the Environment
Location: Durham, NC
Full-time job - 40 hours per week
This program coordinator will provide support split evenly between the Nicholas School of the Environment’s (NSOE) Associate Dean for Experiential Education and Undergraduate Research (AD-EEUR) and the Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (AD-DEI).
Experiential Education: The NSOE has three undergraduate majors, four professional master’s programs, and six PhD programs. Field-based and service-based research and learning is a critical component of NSOE educational programs. The Program Coordinator will provide leadership and operational support to faculty and students engaged in these educational experiences. The Program Coordinator will provide administrative support for educational field trips and provide training and best practices for students engaged in experiential learning.
Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DEI): The NSOE has a strong commitment to DEI represented by its DEI strategic plans and DEI Implementation Plan. These DEI commitments involve the entire NSOE community, including all students, staff, and faculty, and also involve community engagement. This Program Coordinator will coordinate DEI activities within the NSOE, coordinate with our graduate-student DEI Fellows, communicate DEI activities within the Nicholas School, lead events, assist with and/or co-build new initiatives, and evaluate the NSOE’s DEI programs and activities.
Responsibilities
Program coordination for experiential education (45%)
With the AD-EEUR:
- develop new experiential education opportunities within the NSOE;
- write grant proposals and seek external funding to support experiential education;
- prepare budgets for new experiential education activities;
- understand field trip policies and be able to explain policies to faculty, teaching assistants, course staff, and students;
- conduct training for teaching assistants and other course staff;
- support faculty in developing budgets for field trips and field courses;
- organize transportation, food, housing, and other logistics for field trips in NSOE courses;
- maintain records of field trip expenses, process reimbursements for field trip expenses; coordinate with the bursar’s office on field course fees; and
- prepare monthly budget reports for the AD-EEUR.
Program coordination for DEI (45%)
With the AD-DEI:
- identify and meet regularly with student leaders of various NSOE DEI initiatives;
- schedule and plan itineraries for NSOE advisory meetings and town halls;
- manage budgets;
- develop and ensure on-going evaluations of DEI programs and initiatives;
- develop and send out semesterly pulse-check surveys for faculty, staff, and students;
- maintain and add materials to the DEI website, including video editing and transcription;
- craft monthly DEI newsletters and coordinate article development with DEI fellows;
- draft response messages about current events in collaboration with community members of affected identities;
- write grant proposals and seek external funding to support DEI goals; and
- build, organize, and lead curricula, training, and field trips with NSOE and community partners.
Other tasks as assigned (10%)

Work requires analytical, communications and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.
Experience
Work requires one year of experience in program administration or involving academic, instructional or counseling activities to acquire skills necessary to plan, coordinate and implement a variety of program activities and events.

Preferred Qualifications/Skills
Bachelors' Degree in communications, environmental education, community engagement, or other related fields. Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, demonstrated writing/editing skills, experience with WordPress or website maintenance, social media (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube etc.), and project management.
