About the Wheaton Urban District :
The Wheaton Urban District is located within the Community Engagement Cluster. The Wheaton Urban District provides special services to the Central Business District to ensure that downtown Wheaton is maintained in a clean, safe, and attractive manner to promote a vibrant social and business environment and long-term economic viability and vitality. These services include security, streetscape maintenance, tree maintenance, sidewalk repairs, marketing, and events. View a Map of the Wheaton Urban District .
About the Position:
The Wheaton Urban District is seeking three (3) Public Service Worker II ’s , a ci vic-minded person with a strong desire to provide a valuable service to the Wheaton community. These employees w ill work in a team environment and be responsible for the maintenance and beautification of the downtown v icinity. The work-shifts vary, either 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday or 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. The individuals selected for these positions will be considered an "Essential Employee". Essential employees must report to work during a period of general emergency or liberal leave. A valid driver’s license is required to maintain employment. This is a position of public trust which requires selected candidates to pass a drug and alcohol screening test, and medical examination.
What You Will Be Doing:
- Litter collection.
- Sidewalk sweeping/ cleaning.
- Graffiti removal.
- Landscaping maintenance.
- Washing of trash receptacles.
- Snow removal.
- Staffing of special functions/events.
- Using power tools and equipment.
- Working outdoors in all types of weather.
- Daily interactions with the public.
- Driving to and from the Urban District to the County disposal site.

Education : Ability to read and write in English and carry out simple written instructions.
Experience : None .
Equivalency : None.
Physical Ability : Ability and willingness to perform work for prolonged periods in severe weather. The ability to exert moderate physical effort for prolonged periods and heavy physical effort for limited periods. Preferred CriteriaPreferred Criteria :
There are No Preferred Criteria Assessments . All applicants will be reviewed by OHR for minimum qualifications. Those applicants who meet minimum qualifications will be rated “Qualified,” placed on the Eligible List, and may be considered for an interview.
Preference for interviews will be given to applicants with experience in the following :
- Urban Maintenance work.
- Customer Service and/or Service Delivery.
- Have used power tools .
- Have landscaping knowledge.
- Oral/Written Communication.
- Have a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
