Our city is growing, and we are currently hiring for a Water Operator to join our talented team of operators in the Public Works department. The person in this role is responsible for operating equipment to assist in the operations, maintenance, and repair of the city's water infrastructure.

This role will allow for an individual to start at a Water Operator I, Water Operator II, or Water Operator III position depending on qualifications and experience. No previous experience is required for the Water Operator I position, and all training will be provided.

This is a full-time and benefitted position located in the City of Box Elder. The schedule is typically Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. with an option for a four day 10-hour shift schedule and three days off based on the season.

MAJOR DUTIES:

• Assists in the installation and repair of water system components; as well as the installation, maintenance, repair, and reading of water metering components.
• Assists in the collection of water samples; as well as performing visual checks of facilities for equipment malfunctions and assists in repairing/correcting malfunctions.
• Maintain records and logs. Collects and records additional performance information.
• Assists in locating underground utilities.

This position will also include the following duties: building maintenance, assisting with traffic safety devices and controlling traffic at work sites, responding to after-hours emergencies, assisting will special city events, and may assist with snow removal operations.

ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

Abilities: Learn the techniques, equipment, and supplies used in water utility maintenance. Learn city and departmental safety policies and procedures; as well as the geographic layout of the city, including street names and locations. Ability to learn the operation of assigned vehicles, trucks and equipment and the maintenance and cleaning of those vehicles/equipment. Use and safe handling of hand and power tools.

Skills: Effective written and verbal skills.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK:

• The work consists of related water system operation duties. Inclement weather and heavy traffic contribute to the complexity of the position.
• The purpose of this position is to operate, maintain, and repair the city water system. Successful performance contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of utility services.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• High School Diploma or GED
• Must obtain a Class I operator's certification in Water Distribution and a Class I operator's certification in Water Treatment in accordance with the state of South Dakota within 18 months of hire.
• Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the State of South Dakota for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
• Must obtain a South Dakota Class B CDL (Commercial Driver's License) within 18 months of hire.
