Rangers play a hugely important role at the National Trust, thinking long term to look after our special places. Our strategy focus areas, of making everyone feel welcome, and looking after nature, mean that we are investing in ranger services to help us deliver positive changes. We are looking to recruit a Ranger to join our team on the Lizard and Penrose property with this role centred on ensuring access opportunities are enhanced at our diverse coastal properties, whilst respecting and reflecting the important landscape, and unique wildlife.

What it's like to work here:The Lizard peninsula forms the southern-most point of mainland Britain. It is an area renowned for its rare wildlife, unique geology and its landscape dominated by heathland, farmland and narrow river valleys surrounded by a rugged and dramatic coastline. To the north of the peninsula, in the area known as Meneage, flows the Helford River with its creekside oak woodlands and rich inter-tidal mudflats.

The staff Ranger team consists of 5 people, a Lead Ranger and two Area Rangers each managing one G9 Ranger. This post will flexibly work to support both Area Rangers to deliver valuable project work, but we envisage c80% of the role will fall within the sphere of access, particularly in delivering small-scale project work related to the maintenance and enhancement of the Coast Path national trail.

What you'll be doing:You'll use your practical and organisational skills and experience in countryside management to help the team deliver our ambitious plans for access and conservation. You will deliver small scale projects, taking our work beyond the every day, to bring long-term gains for people and nature.

You'll be upgrading sections of coastal path, using your skills to improve access for all, in a way that is sensitive in highly protected and much-loved landscapes. You'll support the delivery of our work for nature and put conservation at the heart of everything you do. This will include projects such as woodland management, e.g. glade creation for butterflies, and scrub clearance to protect some of the Lizard's wildlife hotspots, including outcrops home to unique assemblages of rare plants.

You'll be eager to share your expertise with our volunteers and make the most of their skills and enthusiasm. You'll support volunteer involvement in all we do and may be asked to take responsibility for a particular volunteer group or task, as part of our wider volunteer offer.

  • Deliver practical conservation work to protect and enhance the conservation status of the property
  • Show devotion to protecting nature, heritage and the outdoors
  • Able to engage with visitors
  • Work independently and in a team
  • Be able to work safely, following risk assessments and compliance with safety procedures
  • Experience in a similar outdoor setting and nature conservation
  • A full UK driving licence
