United Way of Lake and Sumter Counties was established over 50 years ago and works to enhance the lives of residents within three main impact areas: health, education and income. United Way launched its Reading Pals program over 2 years ago- the aim for the program is to help students enhance their learning skills over the summer months. Volunteers and staff meet with students weekly to read age-appropriate books. Volunteers are equipped with understanding teaching reading techniques to help optimize the time spent with students. Pre and Post test measures are utilized to help staff, parents and teachers educational gains.

Member Duties : AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associates will be assisting the Education Department in evaluating the program, preparing materials and choosing age-appropriate books, facilitating pre and post tests, preparing progress notes, and maintaining communication with community stakeholders. Furthermore, Summer Associates will assist UWLS staff in executing the Educational Min-Conference which will be held on July 15th.
