SUMMARY
Under general direction of the Director of Nursing, the overnight RN Supervisor is responsible for the total nursing care of the facility’s residents on the assigned shift in accordance with established policy. Plans, directs, and supervises the performances of nursing personnel. Relates effectively with other shifts for continuity of care; maintains satisfactory relations with other departments and care providers.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned as needed by the Department Director.
Receives a report from the previous shift of all residents and identifies special resident care needs
Conducts rounds at the beginning of the shift to visit each resident to observe and assess each resident’s condition; identifies special patient care needs and adjusts assignments as necessary to meet special needs.
Assists physicians as needed during the physician’s visits in the facility. Inform physicians, either in person or by telephone as necessary of changes in resident’s conditions; takes and records physician orders and assures the orders are followed; ensures required laboratory studies are obtained. Informs oncoming shift nursing staff of resident’s conditions and other significant information.
Performs, or assigns to competent staff, the following duties: takes and records patients’ vital signs, dresses wounds, administers and records specific medications, orally or by subcutaneous or intramuscular injection; assembles and uses such equipment as catheters, tracheotomy tubes, and oxygen suppliers.
Supervises and monitors the use of supplies and assures proper reporting of charges.
Observes patients and reports adverse reactions to medication or treatment to medical personnel in charge in a timely manner.
Informs resident families and/ or responsible party of any untoward change in the resident’s condition, including offering therapeutic counseling of residents, families, and/or responsible parties as indicated.
Maintains accurate charting of residents’ families, and/or responsible parties indicated.
Assists in providing information as needed to ensure required documentation, i.e.: MDS, MMDS, Quarterly Assessments, and Care Plans, are completed in a timely manner.
Admits residents to the Health Care Units, Stroh Hall, or Hoerichs Hall, in accordance with physician orders, completes the required documentation, notifies reception and Administrative Personnel as required.
Discharges residents from the Health Care Units, Stroh Hall or Hoerichs Hall, in accordance with physician orders, i.e.: to return the resident to their apartment in the Resident Center, to another area of the Health Care Unit, to an acute care hospital, or the resident’s designated funeral home. Completes all the required documentation and then notifies the reception and administrative Personnel as required.
Monitors, assign, and supervise nursing personnel during the assigned shift to assure the residents needs are net effectively, and in a timely manner.
Monitors scheduling for adequate staffing, will notify Unit Clerk of staffing needs and/or changes.
Ensures residents participate as fully as possible in any activities offered: therapeutic, social religious, etc. by providing encouragement, transportation assistance, or other assistance as needed.
Investigates any incident, or unusual occurrences involving residents, nursing personnel, or visitor, and completes all required documentation.
Participates in planning changes, improvements, and safety programs.
Supports and enforces infection-control policies and procedures.
Responds to Fire and Disaster incidents according to facility and departmental policies and procedures.
Reports all pertinent information to the Director of Nursing that is necessary to provide continuity of care and organized, effective management of the nursing unit.
Serves as a Team Leader, Team Builder, and conflict manager by developing, demonstrating and maintaining a cooperative relationship with residents, residents’ families, and other facility staff.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Directly supervise 20 or more employees on the Nursing units. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with Edenwald’s policies and applicable laws. Provides orientation and training for employees and agency staff; assigns and directs work; appraises performance; recommends disciplinary actions for employees; addresses complaints in a professional manner and with confidentiality.
QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Must be a graduate of an approved school of Nursing and have a minimum of five years related experience preferably in a long-term environment.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret Nursing professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write patient medical reports/charts and procedural instructions. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of residents, family members and/ or responsible parties, physicians, coworkers, and other department supervisors, managers, or general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add and subtract, multiply, and divide in all units, using whole numbers, fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio and percentages.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardized exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in oral written or schedule form.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Must have and maintain an R.N. license in the State of Maryland. Current CPR and First Aid certifications. Maintain all continuing education as required by COMAR 10.07.02 (Comprehensive Care) and/or 10.07.14 (Assisted Living). Other education deemed necessary by the Dementia Service Coordinator.
