Job Summary and Qualifications

Under the general supervision of the Respiratory Therapy Supervisor, the Respiratory Therapist provides cardiopulmonary services to patients in accordance with accepted respiratory therapy practices and established Departmental and Hospital standards of care. Collaborates with the Director of Laboratory for technical supervision of the I-Stat machine.


Utilizes specialized knowledge of cardiopulmonary principles in the provision of critical care services.

  • a.In the emergent situation, ventilates and assists in the intubation of the patient- initiates, conducts, and modifies respiratory therapy techniques in an emergency setting, including CPR, monitoring, and patient transport.
  • b.Selects, assembles, and checks mechanical ventilators for proper function, operation, and cleanliness, including correction of malfunctions.
  • c.Conducts prescribed therapeutic procedures to achieve maintenance of patent airway, including maintenance of adequate humidification, use of appropriate oro- and naso-pharyngeal airways, endotracheal intubation, and extubation.
  • d. Conducts prescribed therapeutic procedures to achieve spontaneous and artificial ventilation.
  • e. Conducts prescribed therapeutic procedures to achieve adequate oxygenation including adjustment of oxygen concentration, adjustment of PEEP/CPAP, and prevention of hypoxemia.
  • f.Available while on duty for all emergent situations (Code Blue and Code Pink), (See “Code Blue/Code Pink policy).


Utilizes specialized knowledge of cardiopulmonary procedures in performing diagnostic studies.


  • a.Performs and evaluates bedside spirometry and pulmonary mechanics.
  • b.Performs and evaluates blood gas analysis.
  • c.Selects, assembles, and checks manometers and gauges, EKG devices, respirometers, and oximeter monitors for proper function, operation, and cleanliness, including correction of malfunctions.
  • d.Performs quality control procedures for blood gas analyzers.


Utilizes specialized knowledge of respiratory procedures in performing general therapy.

  • a. Reviews existing data in patient record including admission and current, patient history, physical examination, pulmonary function values, blood gas results, additional laboratory data, and EKG.
  • b.Collects and evaluates additional pertinent clinical information by inspection, palpation, percussion, auscultation, and patient interview.
  • c.Determines appropriateness of prescribed therapy and goals for identified pathophysiological state.
  • d.Selects, assembles, and checks gas administration, metering and analyzing equipment for proper function, operation, and cleanliness, including correction of malfunctions.
  • e.Conducts prescribed therapeutic procedures to achieve removal of bronchopulmonary secretions, and administers prescribed pharmacological agents.
  • f. Modifies treatment techniques based on patient response to IPPB, incentive breathing devices, aerosol therapy, oxygen therapy, chest physiotherapy, and mechanical ventilation.
  • gConducts routine rounds of all inpatients to assess respiratory status and reports all putinent patient information to the patient care team (nurses, supervisor, MD’s) for appropriate intervention as needed.

Utilizes specialized knowledge of respiratory principles in performing general duties.

  • a.Evaluates and monitors patient response to respiratory therapy.
  • b.Records therapy and results according to Department standards with communication of information to appropriate members of the health care team.

Bases decision-making on sound principles related to quality of care in the Department. Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide cardiopulmonary services to patients served in relation to growth and development over the life span to identify their requirements relative to population-specific needs. Utilizes appropriate principles in the provision of direct patient care services .

  • a. Utilizes appropriate body mechanics in the moving and lifting of patients and equipment.
  • b. Utilizes appropriate precautions related to infection control in relation to patients and equipment/ supplies.
  • c.Utilizes appropriate safety precautions in all diagnostic/therapeutic procedures to ensure patient safety/comfort.


Other duties as assigned.

What qualifications you will need:


  • Licensed through NBRC
  • RRT/Respiratory Care Practitioner (RRT / RCP) through the Texas Medical Board
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Spt, or ACLS Instructor must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support, or BCLS Instructor must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
  • PALS Pediatric Adv Life Supt, or PALS Instructor must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
