Position Purpose
To work with a multidisciplinary research team to advance a research portfolio with a global reach. The Space Medicine Innovations Lab’s current areas of research are:
  • Assessing brain function using the brain’s auditory system in people with various conditions (HIV, Zika, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s)
  • Developing and accessing new audiological tests both in the US and the developing world
  • Testing and developing self-directed autonomous interactive media based behavioral health tools and virtual reality for use in isolated and confined environments (e.g. Antarctic stations)
  • Use of hyperbaric oxygen for research and clinical applications
  • Other technology/science projects for NASA/Department of Defense
Individual will be performing studies, collecting data, analyzing results, and communicating with international partners. The successful candidate will be self-directed and have the ability to learn new skills, troubleshoot problems, work with a wide range of people, and work on multiple projects.

Required Qualifications - Education and Yrs Exp
Bachelors plus 2-3 years' experience or equivalent combination of education and experience

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree with a relevant scientific or engineering major.

Experience:
  • Two years of relevant laboratory/research experience

Skills & Knowledge:
  • Competence in laboratory methods, procedures and techniques.
  • Ability to work independently and apply critical thinking and sound judgment.
  • Self-directed individual who has good organizational and time management skills.
  • Knowledge of computers and software applications including Office, and Endnote, Matlab.
  • The ablity to learn My SQL, Javascript, HTML, and PHP is desired.
  • Knowledge of standard computer software packages for data analysis and presentation, and on-line literature search engines.
  • Commitment to diversity and to serving the needs of a diverse community

Preferred Qualifications
  • Coding experience in My SQL, Javascript, HTML, and PHP.

Key Accountabilities

Description
Experiments
  • Conducts experiments by applying established methods and procedures in the areas of human physiology and psychology.
  • Sets up and assists with research protocols and experiments under the general guidance of the principal investigators and other senior investigators in the laboratory.
  • Recruits subjects, leads informed consent discussions, tests human subjects.
  • Observes experimental results in progress and maintains written records of activities and observations; applies past experience and precedents to identify and troubleshoot problems. Anticipates unexpected findings and assists in troubleshooting
  • Reports experimental results to the principal investigator and other senior laboratory personnel and assists in their analysis.
  • Adheres to laboratory safety requirements including general and chemical/hazardous waste safety
  • May help with experiments with swine or mice.
  • Assists with new study set up and preparation.

  • Collects and analyzes data using Microsoft Office, Matlab, and other programs
  • Prepares appropriate and understandable representations of data such as graphs, charts, tables, statistical summaries, and contributes to the preparation of scientific manuscripts.
  • Checking data quality from off campus research sites. Prepares data summaries and reports.
  • Conducts literature searches to assist in establishing new laboratory techniques.
  • Assists with IRB submissions, subject record management, and regulatory paperwork
  • Assists with IACUC applications
