The Position

We are seeking a highly motivated software engineer with a strong background in bioinformatics to join Genentech’s Data Science and Statistical Computing group to support the software development of tools for the design, analysis, and curation of emerging functional genomics data generated across the Research organization.

The successful candidate will work in a collaborative environment, partnering closely with data scientists, computational biologists, software engineers and technology development scientists to develop, deploy, and maintain scientific software solutions to address computational needs driven by emerging functional genomics approaches such as CRISPR, base editing and prime editing. In particular, the candidate will be responsible for the development of production-level interactive applications on top of extending and maintaining existing internal CRISPR databases.

Communication of results to a diverse audience of quantitative and experimental scientists will be key, and external publication of both software and methodological innovations is strongly encouraged.

Requirements

• MS or Ph.D. in bioinformatics, biostatistics, computer science, mathematics, or similar, with a strong record of software development.

Qualifications

• Extensive experience in the use of a high-level programming language such as R (preferred) or Python for statistics and computational biology.

• Experience with web application development (Shiny preferred).

• Experience with UNIX and shared high-performance computing environments.

• Experience with assays and accompanying data formats used in molecular biology such as those for next-generation sequencing and various modalities of CRISPR technology.

• Experience with the Bioconductor ecosystem a plus.

• Strong knowledge of CRISPR-based technologies and experimental designs encouraged.

• Ability to work independently and collaboratively on multiple fast-paced projects in molecular biology and genomics.

• Collaborative researcher, making co-author level contributions to scientific publications.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $97,400 to $190,800. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
