Organization

The Rescue Mission Alliance (RMA) is a Christian non-profit organization that has been serving the less fortunate in Southern California through emergency and long-term rehabilitation services since 1972. RMA partners with local churches to meet the spiritual needs of the people we serve. The Victor Valley Thrift Store is a division of RMA’s Victor Valley Rescue Mission and provides ministry revenue and vocational opportunities for our clients.

Summary

The Driver duties are primarily picking up donations from select areas of San Bernardino County and delivering them to our thrift store in Hesperia. In addition this position involves filling in where needed at the Thrift Store, i.e. production, sorting, hanging, tagging, and pricing. This is a full-time, non-exempt regular position reporting to the Victory Valley Thrift Store Supervisor. This position is eligible for overtime and benefits according to applicable guidelines and may require overtime and/or weekend work. Compensation is commensurate with skills and experience.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Pick up and transport donated items via box truck from area homes and businesses to our thrift store production or storage facility.
• Load and unload truck, utilizing proper lifting techniques and the appropriate tools and equipment provided, asking for assistance with awkward or items too heavy to be moved by one person.

• Safely negotiate in a variety of environments, e.g. steep stairs, uneven surfaces.
• Prior to daily route, inspect vehicle and maintain vehicle supplies such as gas, oil, water, tires, etc. to ensure vehicle is kept in proper working condition.
• Keeps vehicle maintenance record.
• Report any mechanical problems encountered with vehicles to supervisor.
• Understand and operate the truck’s navigation system and follow written and verbal geographic directions.
• Obey all traffic laws and follow established traffic and transportation procedures.
• Remain in contact with supervisor by radio or cell phone

• Comply with all Federal, State, and local laws regulating safe driving, and RMA policies and procedures.

• Ensure any accident or injury is promptly reported.
• Maintain a safe driving record and appropriate driver's license classification while operating company vehicles.

Other Duties & Responsibilities

• Attend all safety matrix and driver meetings.
• Comply with RMA safety program.

Supervisory Responsibilities

There are no employees reporting to this position.

Qualifications

• High school diploma, GED or equivalent.

• Valid CA driver license and insurable under RMA.

Skills

• Ability to reach, bend, and lift boxes, furniture, etc. into and out of delivery truck.
• Must be able to do extensive driving in a variety of road and weather conditions.
• Consistently demonstrate the ability to work safely.
• Requires strong customer service orientation.
• Possess a team player attitude and ability to work with a wide variety of people with different personalities and backgrounds.
• Have excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
• Able to work independently and under some pressure to meet deadlines.
• Previous route driving experience a plus.
• Bi-lingual (English-Spanish) preferred.

Use of personal navigation device in truck

Physical Demands

• Able to lift and move up to 60lbs.
• Hands-on position, including moving boxes, lifting merchandise, etc.

Equipment

• Box truck and/or cargo van.
• Two way radio.
• Hand truck and other tools required for safe lifting.

Work Environment

This position will function in a Thrift Store and warehouse setting where medium duty equipment such as forklifts is in use. Will also be working in proximity with an at-risk population where errant behavior and disease risk may be present. Appropriate safety considerations will be required to avoid illness or injury.
