Job description

The School Age Program Lead teacher is directly responsible for the care and supervision of children 5-12 years of age, and the planning and implementing of activities for children. The lead teacher must have the understanding, ability, physical health, emotional stability, and good judgment to meet the needs of the children in care.

a) Lead in the planning, teaching of lessons, homework support, and activities for children in the program in accordance with WAC, WaKids, and Common Core standards, as well as the Washington State Early Learning and Development Guidelines.

b) Promote and stimulate program participation

c) Follow all policies, procedures, safety rules, and regulations to ensure child safety

d) Communicate in a positive and effective manner with all participants, school officials, parents, community members and co-workers

e) Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all circumstances

f) Practice vigilant supervision when working with children

g) Actively assist, as needed, with the behavioral, medical, and personal care needs of the children

h) Empathize, communicate, and work with a variety of people from diverse backgrounds which includes low-income and vulnerable people

i) Be responsible for maintaining the orderliness and cleanliness of the work and play areas

j) Assist in general housekeeping of the program space to include, but not limited to; cleaning bathrooms, wiping down tables, sweeping/ mopping/ vacuuming floors, taking out trash and locking all doors, etc.

k) Attend to other duties as assigned

During interactions with the children, Lead Teachers must:

1.) Have a desire to work with children, age 5-13, with complex needs, including - but not limited to - experiencing poverty and/or trauma

2.) Actively seek out meaningful conversations with children and talk about events of importance to the child.

3.) Be available and responsive to children and interact on the child's level, encouraging them to ask questions, share experiences, ideas, and feelings

4.) Encourage children to evaluate a problem and form a resolution rather than impose an adult solution; help children to develop mediation and negotiation skills to solve problems

5.) Treat all children in care equally and equitably in care regardless of race, religion, culture, sex, family structure and ability.

6.) Demonstrate positive interactions with children and other adults when children are present.

7.) Be in frequent verbal communication with children in a positive, reinforcing, cheerful and soothing way.

8.) Use appropriate positive discipline consistently.

9.) Perform age or developmentally appropriate nurturing activities that:
- Take into consideration a parent's own nurturing practices
- Promote each child's learning self-help and social skills; and
- Stimulate the child's development; and
- Provide each child opportunities for vocal expression; adult voices must not always dominate the overall sound of the group.

Physical Requirements:

· Have uninhibited physical mobility in bending and lifting up to 30 lbs.

· Be capable of auditory and visual oversight of the children and staff.

· Be able to verbally interact with the children and staff.

Other Requirements and Information:

a) Have a high school diploma or equivalent

b) Complete basic STARS training within three months of assuming the position of lead teacher

c) Have a valid State Driver’s License

d) Complete ongoing training hours as required under WAC 170-297-180

e) Pre-Employment Post-offer health exam which includes tuberculin screening

f) Criminal history/child abuse information check including Washington State Department of Early Learning

g) Portable Background Check prior to employment through MERIT

h) Proof of MMR Vaccination

i) CPR/First Aid certification

j) Washington Food Handlers card

k) Department of Children, Youth, and Family required licensing trainings

Pay is negotiable with experience and education.

$14.00 to $16.00/hour.

Dental and Vision available after a probationary period.
