Position Purpose
The Senior Associate Athletics Director for PE and Recreation serves as a member of the Director of Athletics and Recreation’s senior management team that provides strategic leadership and direction to 35 varsity sports programs. Reporting to the Director of Athletics and Recreation, this position leads the administration of all PE and Recreation programs, including direct oversight of select varsity sports programs. This will encompass the supervision of head coaches and their staff and is responsible for developing and promoting the department’s mission within those programs.

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
  • Proven leadership and management skills.
  • Six years of athletics administrative experience, preferably including sport oversight and/or collegiate coaching experience.
  • Familiarity with physical education and recreation programs
  • Commitment to fostering respectful communication and collaboration within a diverse community.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and discretion in sensitive situations and work effectively in a fast-paced and complex work environment.
  • Demonstrated success engaging and building collaborative relationships with various stakeholders, including coaches, student-athletes, faculty, staff, campus, and corporate partners, donors, and community members.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team.

Key Accountabilities

Description
Program Administration
  • Responsible for strategic leadership and direction of Dartmouth’s PE and Recreation programs. Including serving as departmental liaison with Outing Club and other College and Medical Center groups involved in fitness, physical education, and recreational activities, strengthening ties with these other groups, encouraging co-participation, and developing beneficial programs.
  • In consultation with the Sr. AD for Finance and Director of Athletics and Recreation, develops budgets and exercises budget control over all assigned programs and activities.
  • Manages full-time and part-time staff (Admin assistant, Associate Athletics Director for Club and Intramural sports, Intramural Coordinator, FLIP Coordinator, and Director of Snowsports and Summer Sailing) in the PE/Recreation Office and provides guidance and direction when applicable in addition to fostering professional development opportunities.
  • Oversees the training of staff on administrative and financial procedures and policies.
  • Maintains and communicates current awareness of developments, requirements, and regulations related to safety, first aid, and risk management.
  • Supervises the development of useful publications and handbooks and coordinates the production of promotional materials and announcements regarding program offerings.
  • Attends annual Ivy Recreation meetings and coordinates staff attendance.

Description
Physical Education Program
  • Directs the development and coordination of a comprehensive physical education program available to Dartmouth students for academic credit.
  • Hires, evaluates, and assigns all physical education instructors.
  • Serves as departmental spokesperson in articulating the advantages and benefits of the physical education program and its diverse offerings.
  • Designs and coordinates occasional experimental health and fitness classes with potential as physical education offerings and recommends any possible required courses that seem to have universal value.
  • Oversees management of Mascoma Lake Sailing Facility and the integration of Sailing Club activities with physical education courses in sailing and Dartmouth Sailing Team activities.
  • Communicates with Facilities Office in timely fashion on all scheduling matters.
  • Serves on CUESA sub-committee for PE/Wellness Education matters.

Club Sport Program
  • Oversees the Director of Club Sports in organizing, developing, and maintaining overall supervision of a comprehensive Club Sport Program available to students at Dartmouth College (including Cheerleading).
  • Monitors the experience of club sport athletes and the quality of each program.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Club Sports, serves as the sport administrator for selected club sports.

Recreation Programs (Fitness and Life Improvement Program (F.L.I.P.) and Intramural)
  • Directs the development and coordination of a comprehensive fitness program available to students, faculty, and staff at Dartmouth College and community gym members.
  • Directs the development and coordination of a comprehensive intramural program available to students, faculty, and staff of Dartmouth College, largely directed by the Associate Athletics Director for Club Sports and Intramurals and the Intramural Coordinator.
  • Serves as a resource for registration, scheduling, and maintenance of intramural participation records, and provides eligibility matters and assigning of officials, sportsmanship disciplinary measures, venue preparation and maintenance, and awards, and ensures the creation of a wholesome environment for intramural activities.

Description
Fundraising
  • Oversees the generation of acknowledgment letters to Alumni and Friends donors in all club sports, including additional letters from the Director of Athletics and Recreation to high-level givers.
  • Directs the planning and execution of fundraising and Alumni and Friends donor events for Men’s Rugby and Figure Skating.
  • Administrator on the Advisory Boards for Friends of Men’s Rugby and Friends of Fencing, and Friends of Club Sports
  • Collaborates with the Athletics and Recreation Fundraising staff to ensure that club sport student leaders interact with Friends volunteers in a manner that constructively supports the Development Office’s athletic fundraising efforts.

Varsity Sport Administration
  • If determined by the Director of Athletics and Recreation, position may include Varsity Sport Administration oversight. Sport Oversight responsibilities and duties for selected Varsity Sports Teams. Including but not limited to:
    o Supervision and evaluation of coaches, scheduling, budget development, and oversight, regular evaluation of program resources and performance goals, strategic planning, and management of student-athlete grievances and issues
    o Providing leadership, directing, and establishing meetings with coaching staff
    o Traveling with team
    o Attending practices
    o Building rapport with support staff
