POSITION SUMMARY: This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Senior Staff Accountant II supports the CFO by providing high level accounting and administrative support involving the use of discretion and independent judgment. This position leads all areas of CIP accounting, and grant accounting, including cash, controls, procurement, account payables, account reconciliations, and fixed assets.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Maintains an accounting system to accomplish the proper recording and reporting of all CIP and grant transactions, assets, and liabilities of the YMCA.
  • Lead the purchasing compliance for all grant related purchasing. Includes, but is not limited to writing, implementation, and follow through of controls and requirements related to Federal Grant’s.
  • Ensure accuracy of submissions/reporting to various County, State and Federal partners. Including, maintaining and measuring Treasury Department required KPI’s.
  • Lead the implementation of Single Audit controls and ensure compliance. Implement and administer grant reporting/audit requirements.
  • Primary fiscal contact for sub-recipients and funders; understand specific grant requirements; ensure compliance on contract conditions and assurances; ensure reporting requirements are met.
  • Setup, coordinate, and monitor the budgeting process and detail for assigned grants. Resolve accounting and reporting issues as necessary; identify issues, concerns and problems and communicate with CFO and program officers.
  • Monitor sub-recipients. Perform sub-recipients’ site visits. Review budgets and reimbursement requests for appropriateness, and ensure sub-recipients are compliant with established administrative and financial policies, procedures, and sound business practices.
  • Manage contractor agreements and ensure the terms and conditions of agreements are met and properly documented and communicated.
  • Coordinate with the CFO and program staff, to ensure transactions are properly recorded and agree to the grant/contract agreement, while also ensuring sub-recipient/subcontract financial activities adhere to deliverable deadlines.
  • Review invoices and expenses related to various programs managed.
  • Provide information to finance staff as necessary to assist in month end close activities. Prepare invoices and requests for payments to funding agencies and reconcile grant expenses to funder reports.
  • Maintain project-related records, including contracts and change orders.
  • Maintain efficient electronic and paper filing systems for confidential financial records.
  • Perform all areas of work in a confidential manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting is preferred.
  • Three years or more related experience working as grant accountant, preferably in a nonprofit setting.
  • Strong communication, organizational, prioritization, negotiation, project management and problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently and handle multiple projects/tasks on an ongoing basis meeting key deadlines.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite required with the ability to become familiar with organization-specific computer programs and software.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Ability to respond to safety and emergency situations.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Visual, auditory, and verbal ability to communicate effectively.
  • Must have high level of alertness, concentration, and initiative.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. and stand, walk, or sit for extended periods of time; occasionally stoop/bend.
  • Maintain a neat and professional appearance at all times.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelors degree in accounting preferred.
  • Three years or more of related experience is required.
  • Non-profit organization and multi-site organization experience is preferred.
  • CPR/AED/First Aid and New Employee Orientation required with 30 days of hire.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to relate and communicate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Possess strong knowledge and understanding of accounting, budgeting, and cost control principles including generally accepted accounting principles, and financial and accounting reporting systems.
  • Knowledge and understanding of general business matters required, including cash management, taxes, banking, and forecasting.
  • Experience in software report writing and analysis of financial and operating data.
  • Knowledge of computer systems, including experience with system selection, new system implementation and project management. Microsoft Office experience and ability to quickly learn other software programs is required.
