What is the role?

Joining a dynamic team of professionals, your role will be central to the short and long-term planning of our water resources. Working in collaboration with the broader team, the role will entail technical water resource and hydrological analysis, as well as regulatory reporting.

This work will include:

• developing our optimal monthly water resources supply strategy to manage drought risk over a 12 to 18 months period.
• managing a water resources system model which is used to forecast our future supply and demand balance position.
• monitoring our water resource position against our latest Drought Plan triggers and actions.
• strategic outage planning involving coordinating with WECS and Operations
• technical analysis to support the production of the Water Resources Management Plan and Drought Plan, including working with external consultants on work programmes which are outsourced. This work mainly focuses on supply side forecasting and decision-making, and depending on experience may include hydrological modelling, climate change impact assessment, water resources system modelling for deployable output assessment and option benefit assessment, outage analysis, and decision-making modelling.
• supporting the development of the annual Energy Budget in conjunction with Operations.
• supporting our regulatory reporting which includes outage and water balance calculation (eg, water into supply and treatment works volumes).
• working collaboratively and effectively with other departments and regulators to ensure regulatory deliverables are completed on time and efficiently.
• providing water resources modelling support to the wider business as and when required.

What are the requirements?

This is a role where you will be required to have a technically sound understanding of IT systems and software, preferably with a background in hydrology and experience of hydrological modelling, and a good understanding of water supply systems.

Within the team you will be working alongside other technically skilled people, and you will also be required to liaise with people across the business. Communicating with a range of audiences is therefore essential to the role, both to gather information and disseminate outputs of your work.

Additional requirements for the role include:

• a degree in a relevant environmental or engineering subject
• experience running water resources system models such as Miser, Aquator or PYWR, or with other hydraulic modelling tools such as EPANET or Infoworks.
• experience in programming for undertaking water resources and hydrological analysis and modelling would be an advantage, in particular with R or Python.
• an understanding of the Water Resource Management Plan process
• the ability to develop, follow and maintain procedures to ensure the accurate maintenance of technical workflows.
• having good attention to detail and organisational skills.
• being methodical with strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work using your own initiative.
