Shellfish Officer


An exciting opportunity has arisen to work within the Environmental Health Team of Canterbury City Council. This role is aimed at supporting the local Fish/Shellfish industry within the district.


CCC14 - £37,822.00 (pro-rata) Part time 10 hours per week (this is a temporary contract for 6 months, but will be reviewed at that time with the potential for it to be extended to 12
months)



The successful candidate will hold the BSc. or MSc. in Environmental Health (or equivalent), be experienced in and have extensive knowledge of the Fishing/Shellfish industry.


This role requires a DBS.



You will be responsible for
  • Managing and ensuring the delivery of live bivalve mollusc related official controls, classification and related enforcement work in Canterbury district.
  • Monitoring of harvesting activity within the district, issue and checks on shellfish registration documents and illegal harvesting.
  • Act as shellfish liaison officer and represent the interests of the council as first contact for Food Standards Agency UK central competent authority. Maintain effective liaison arrangements and communication with relevant stakeholders as required.
  • Be responsible for effective application of Canterbury Local Action plan and communication with associated local action groups especially in relation to poor shellfish results, pollution events and closures.
  • Inspect,and provide necessary export support for operators of fishing vessels operating from Canterbury district.
  • Provide expert support when required for food officers inspecting and approving establishments processing shellfish and fishery products.
  • Manage service level agreements / contracts for sampling, analysis of samples and boat hire as required
  • Take responsibility for personal and professional development as required including meeting competency requirements for food officer role and authorisation by APHA for
enforcement of Food and Environment Protection Act 1985 and Food export certification.



To succeed, you will bring a track record of working collaboratively with internal and external partners, demonstrating good customer care and communicational skills to identify innovative and creative approaches to complaints and Canterbury Council’s objectives.


You will have the ability to take an organised approach to your own workload whilst dealing with conflicting priorities and to ensuring a customer service focused approach.



The post will allow you to work from home on a flexible basis allowing you to cover the 10 hour week to suit your lifestyle.
