JOB SUMMARY:
Under direction, provides professional social service counseling for community residents. Provides diagnostic and therapeutic services that include individual, couple, family and group psychotherapy. Crisis intervention, alternate living plans, resource referral and public education in the field of aging. To perform related work as required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Plans, organizes, manages and participates in the activities of the Social Services Department. Confers with the Security Director concerning objectives, new or revised policies, operating problems and matters affecting other departments and divisions in accordance with established objectives; plan and implement new programs or procedures.
Develops work programs and schedules. Plans and supervises the development of department training and safety programs. Selects and evaluates employees. Provides feedback to employees throughout their review period. Provides feedback during employee performance review that is timely, specific, honest and designed to help the employee succeed.
Assesses and counsels residents and families in adjustments to illness, death, grief and other emotional problems that may or may not be related to aging. Assesses for mental competency and refer appropriately for psychiatric or medical evaluation. Prepares case histories, maintains related records and statistics and prepares reports relevant to the department.
Acts as liaison to Foundation of Laguna Woods Village in identifying residents at risk because of inadequate income, unmet medical needs, etc. Intervenes in crises that occur with frail elderly, the mentally ill and neighbor disputes that involve severe emotional disturbance. Works with county agencies for protection of elderly at-risk residents.
Does investigative work to locate relatives, attorneys and friends when support for resident is needed. Intervenes with residents in areas of abuse, physical, emotional, either self-neglect or fiduciary. Assigns cases and supervises clerical and professional staff. Identifies situations/clients to be evaluated by the nurse practitioner from Saddleback Hospital.
Drives a vehicle to meetings, workshops and other job related responsibilities.
Regular attendance required. All duties are performed on-site for the Community.

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Acts as spokesperson for the department to other departments, media and public officials.
Speak publicly to organizations on behalf of Leisure World residents and the Social Services Department. Develop program that increase or improve social services to community residents.
EQUIPMENT OPERATED:
Car, PC, printer, copier, fax machine and telephone.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is in a climate controlled indoor office and normal outdoor elements.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master's degree in social work and extensive and responsible management level experience involving the administration and management of a social services program.
· Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the job.
· Knowledge of modern office equipment, practices, systems and procedures.
· Knowledge of the principles and practices of counseling emotionally upset older persons.
· Knowledge of the availability, quality and cost of health and social services programs and agencies.
· Knowledge of authoritative reference work in the health and social services fields.
· Ability to relate to the needs and concerns of senior citizens.
· Ability to converse calmly and to soothe emotionally upset persons.
· Ability to establish/maintain effective working relationships with physicians, psychiatrists,
· attorneys, public and private agencies, other departments and divisions and the public.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
· Possession of a valid California driver's license.
· Possession of a California state license as a Clinical Social Worker.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must have physical ability to reach client in multiple dwelling units. Sight and hearing to evaluate emotional and physical well-being of client. Requires sitting for periods of up to 5 hours.
MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
Reading, detailed work, confidentiality, problem solving, reasoning, verbal and written communication skills, customer contact, multiple concurrent tasks and constant interruptions.
