The Florida Commission on Offender Review, formerly known as the Florida Parole Commission, is looking to fill the Staff Assistant – CS position. The Commission on Offender Review performs a vital role in Florida’s criminal justice system by preserving the autonomy needed in post-release decisions affecting inmates and ex-offenders. The commission functions as a quasi-judicial, decision-making body. Commissioners preside over approximately 36 meetings annually at the central office in Tallahassee and at various other locations throughout the state as required by statute. During these public proceedings, the commissioners make a variety of determinations regarding parole and other releases.


Position Description

  • This is administrative work assisting the Regional Administrator with the daily operations of the office. In addition, assist supervisors and other staff personnel as needed. This is not a telecommuting position.
  • Answers the telephone; responds to e-mail inquiries; types, proofreads, and distributes completed reports and documents; coordinates the monthly processing of budget information such as travel, invoices, billing receipts; assist in the coordinating of staff meetings and takes meeting minutes as needed, maintains filing systems, and purges records in accordance with established procedures and retention schedules.
  • Receives and processes incoming and outgoing mail, screens correspondence and other materials to determine proper handling. This includes reviewing and processing incoming bills/invoices in accordance with the State of Florida Prompt Payment law. Maintains office logbooks consisting of a variety of case materials to be assigned and completed by Regional Administrator, Supervisors and Commission Investigators.
  • Prepares routing correspondence for the Regional Administrator; responds to routine requests for information from the public; and assists with the organization of the Regional Administrator’s records and work files.
  • Maintains an updated library of administrative rules, procedure directives, legal opinions, Florida Statutes, agency policies, and other information issued by the Agency Head, Director of Operations, Regional Administrator, and any other policymaker as appropriate; and assists staff in researching and locating information from these sources.
  • Perform other related work as required that may involve working with confidential information and documents.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED FOR THIS POSITION

  • Knowledge of the Criminal Justice System
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision
  • Ability to interact with the public, that may include various law enforcement personnel, victims, inmates, and or their families, etc.
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to multitask
  • Computer skills, to include various Microsoft software programs.

BACKGROUND SCREENING REQUIREMENT: It is the policy of the Florida Commission on Offender Review that any applicant being considered for employment must successfully complete a State and National criminal history check as a condition of employment before beginning employment, and also be screened in accordance with the requirements of Chapter 435, F.S., and, if applicable, Chapter 408, F.S. No applicant may begin employment until the background investigation results are received, reviewed, and approved by the Commission. Background investigations shall include, but not be limited to, fingerprinting for State and Federal criminal records checks through the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and may include local criminal history checks through local law enforcement agencies. Also, employees are subject to background re-screening at least every five (5) years.”
