Job Summary
- Performs a wide variety of laboratory procedures using both manual and automated methods. Is expected to show a considerable degree of independent judgment regarding the performance and reporting of results. Actively participates in the quality improvement activities of the laboratory.
Education
- Bachelors Degree: Medical Technology, Biological Sciences, or Chemistry (Required)
Licenses and Certifications
- ASCP - Amer Soc Clinical Pathology (Preferred)
Experience
- 1 Year experience in relevant laboratory section (Required)

General Responsibilities
- Complies with all Temple University Health System policies and procedures, and all applicable accreditation standards, laws and regulations, including those regarding patient confidentiality such as, but not limited to, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, P. L. 104-191 ('HIPAA') and the rules and regulations implemented hereunder.

Data Entry & Documentation
- Clerical information is entered/recorded in accordance with laboratory clerical policy.
- Worksheets, logs, and other laboratory documents are accurately and legibly completed.
- Laboratory Critical Value and Alert Policy and Procedure (verification and notification) is followed.
- Complies with the Federal fraud and abuse laws as outlined in the Laboratory Corporate Compliance Plan.
Technology & Equipment Use
- Demonstrates technical skill in using equipment that is appropriate for the job role.
- Operates all equipment efficiently and properly per policies and procedures.
- Maintains equipment to ensure maximum productivity.
- Troubleshoots any problems that arise and notifies the correct department upon equipment failure.
- Adapts to new technology and process.
Infection Control
- Follows universal precautions and good infection control practices.
- Follows universal hand washing and sanitization techniques.
- Assures that work areas and equipment are properly cleaned.
- Assures that all lab specimens are placed in approved containers according to hospital and laboratory policy.
Supplies & Equipment Maintenance
- Maintains and stocks adequate unit supplies and equipment.
- Organizes and conducts inventories and requests supplies when needed.
- Keeps all supplies and equipment ready for use.
- Maintains current knowledge base of instrumentation, equipment, and supplies used, and manufacturer's recommendations for use.
- Maintains current knowledge of the quantity and location of all supplies and the status of equipment.
Accountability

Teaching & Training
- Teaches and trains new employees, students and Pathology residents.
- Documents teaching and training appropriately to ensure required documentation for accreditation of laboratory.
Laboratory Tests & Procedures
- Tests/procedures in area of specialty/responsibility are performed according to standard operating procedures and established schedules.
- Uses independent judgment for interpreting difficult work ups and direct testing when indicated. Problems with procedure/performance are resolved and approved alternative methods are used when available.
- Maintains proper quality control of all tests and maintenance of instruments according to laboratory protocol. Section quality assurance policy is followed.
- Documents any noted problems or deviations in proper problem reporting system. Records all necessary information and leaves the report for management review and investigation.
- Performs various clerical functions pertinent to the completion of technical tasks.
- Assists the management team in the functions of quality assurance for quality improvement.
