Under general supervision of an assigned supervisor provides oral and written translation services from English to a designated second language and vice versa at official District meetings, workshops, conferences or special events.

The job class of Translator-Interpreter prepares District-wide written translations of technical, educational and general material for use by District departmental and school site personnel, parents and the public in a designated second language. Incumbents also provide simultaneous interpretations at a wide variety of District and school site meetings, conferences and workshops. The Translator-Interpreter classification is differentiated from varied bilingual classifications or selective positions receiving a bi-lingual stipend in that the latter classes apply bi-lingual skills as an adjunct to the performance of other functional duties OR positions in the latter classes not translate materials which are as diverse or sensitive nor are the materials distributed as broadly as the work of a Translator/Interpreter.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide translation services from English to a designated second language and vice versa, during official District meetings, workshops, conferences and special events, including but not limited to: Individualized-Education-Plan (IEP) team meetings, educational assessment meetings and interviews, and due process hearings; take notes and prepare minutes following meetings as necessary; maintain confidentiality of sensitive and privileged information; interpret previously taped conversations of meetings as needed.
Read and translate written materials, including official documents, forms, letters, notes, reports, presentations and other correspondence from English to a designated second language (e.g. Spanish) and vice versa; produce idiomatic translations considering the type of material and reader viewpoints; determine most accurate shades of meaning and review and edit translations for accuracy, context, readability and style.
Provide assistance to callers, visitors and others regarding educational resources and services in a designated second language; respond to inquiries and provide information concerning related activities, programs, standards, practices, goals, objectives, processes, policies and procedures.
Assist with coordinating and arranging translation services for students and families as assigned; refer families to programs, services and community resources as appropriate; receive and respond to translation requests; maintain and update related work schedules and calendars.
Perform a variety of clerical duties in support of office activities, including establishing and maintaining records and files related to assigned duties; input data into appropriate database systems and import and export of student data using appropriate student information systems for purposes of producing qualitative and quantitative reports as assigned.
May administer standardized educational assessments and provide interpretation services in the course of such administrations.
May provide "voice-over" narration in the designated language(s) for audio or video recordings
Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM ENTRANCE QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Experience
High school diploma, or an equivalent, supplemented by college-level course work in English Language, Spanish Language, or Literature, Business Writing, or a related course; AND two (2) years of experience performing progressively responsible clerical duties/responsibilities involving extensive document writing, data/record management and public contacts; and at least ONE (1) year of professional experience translating written documents and providing simultaneous oral interpretation services.

  • Alternate variations of education/experience may considered by Personnel Commission staff as acceptable to qualify for participation in the examination process resulting in an eligibility list. When appropriate additional work experience beyond the minim requirement may be supplemented for required minimum education requirements.

(a) Written Examination -to assess basic competency in math, English grammar usage and spelling, reading comprehension, and clerical skills - Examination Date TBD

For those passing Requirements (a) and (b):
(c) Structured Oral Interview - to assess technical knowledge and experience, oral interpretation from English to Spanish and Spanish to English, and one's general fitness for successful performance in the position - Examination Date TBD.

A total score will be computed using weighted scores on the written and oral examinations. Applicants must receive a passing score (70%) on each exam part to be placed on the eligibility list.
